Background of the Study:
Traditional education in Oron Local Government has long been regarded as a vehicle for transmitting cultural values and moral principles among community members. This mode of education, which is largely community‐driven and orally transmitted, plays a crucial role in shaping ethical behavior and social responsibility (Okoro, 2023). The study explores how indigenous pedagogical methods—ranging from folklore to ritual storytelling—serve not only as instructional techniques but also as means to reinforce social norms and moral codes (Adebayo, 2024). In recent years, shifts towards formal education have raised concerns about the diminishing influence of traditional practices on youth moral development. Contemporary scholars argue that the erosion of indigenous knowledge systems can lead to a disconnection from ancestral values and a weakening of community solidarity (Ifeoma, 2025). This investigation, therefore, seeks to integrate both qualitative and quantitative insights to understand the dynamics between traditional education and moral upbringing, highlighting the relevance of indigenous methods in today’s socio-cultural context (Chinwe, 2023). The research further examines how community elders and traditional institutions contribute to ethical education within an increasingly modernized framework.
Statement of the Problem:
Despite the rich heritage of traditional education in Oron, modern influences have overshadowed indigenous moral instruction, leading to conflicts between ancestral values and contemporary practices. The dilution of traditional teaching methods may result in a loss of moral clarity and communal identity (Okoro, 2023). The challenge is to understand how modern educational systems integrate—or fail to integrate—these valuable traditional practices, which could be key in addressing youth moral decline and societal disintegration (Adebayo, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the influence of traditional educational practices on moral upbringing.
To evaluate the interaction between indigenous methods and formal education in the community.
To recommend strategies for integrating traditional moral education into modern curricula.
Research Questions:
How does traditional education contribute to moral values among the youth?
In what ways do formal education systems complement or conflict with indigenous moral teachings?
What strategies can enhance the integration of traditional education in moral upbringing?
Research Hypotheses:
There is a significant positive relationship between traditional education and moral behavior among youths.
Formal education systems inadequately incorporate indigenous moral values.
Integrative educational strategies can enhance moral upbringing in the community.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it underscores the importance of traditional education in fostering moral values, which are crucial for community cohesion and ethical societal behavior. The findings will inform policymakers and educators on integrating indigenous wisdom with modern pedagogy, thereby strengthening cultural identity (Ifeoma, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the role of traditional education in moral upbringing in Oron Local Government, Akwa Ibom State.
Definitions of Terms:
Traditional Education: Indigenous methods of knowledge transmission rooted in community practices.
Moral Upbringing: The process through which ethical values and behavior are instilled in individuals.
Cultural Transmission: The passing of cultural beliefs, practices, and values from one generation to another.
