Background of the Study
Ancient road networks in Sapele offer a unique perspective on historical connectivity and socio-economic interactions in Delta State. These networks, revealed through archaeological surveys and remote sensing techniques, indicate sophisticated planning and regional integration in pre-colonial times (Oluwole, 2023). Evidence of well-constructed routes, including remnants of paved roads and causeways, underscores the importance of transportation and trade in fostering cultural exchange and economic development (Adeniran, 2024). The study of these networks not only provides insights into ancient engineering practices but also illuminates the spatial organization of past communities. Integrating archaeological data with historical cartography has enhanced our understanding of regional dynamics and infrastructural innovations (Ibrahim, 2025). This research further examines how these ancient routes contributed to the movement of goods, ideas, and people, reinforcing the social and economic fabric of early societies in Sapele. By critically analyzing the construction, use, and preservation of these roads, the study aims to contribute to broader discourses on heritage management and the significance of infrastructural legacies in shaping modern landscapes.

Statement of the Problem
The archaeological relevance of ancient road networks in Sapele is hindered by limited documentation and preservation challenges. Many segments of these networks have deteriorated due to natural processes and urban encroachment, leading to an incomplete understanding of their historical significance. The scarcity of comprehensive surveys and the absence of interdisciplinary studies have resulted in fragmented interpretations. This study seeks to address these limitations by systematically examining the construction, usage, and degradation of ancient roads, thereby clarifying their role in historical socio-economic dynamics (Adegoke, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To document and analyze ancient road networks in Sapele.

  2. To evaluate their role in facilitating historical trade and communication.

  3. To propose strategies for preserving these infrastructural relics.

Research Questions:

  1. What evidence supports the existence of ancient road networks in Sapele?

  2. How did these roads facilitate regional interaction?

  3. What preservation measures are needed to protect these routes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Ancient road networks played a crucial role in historical trade.

  2. The degradation of these networks is significantly influenced by urban development.

  3. Systematic documentation will enhance preservation strategies.

Significance of the Study
This study underlines the archaeological and cultural importance of ancient road networks, emphasizing their role in regional development. The findings will contribute to heritage conservation efforts and inform urban planning policies aimed at preserving historical infrastructures, benefiting academic researchers and local authorities alike (Balogun, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to ancient road networks in Sapele Local Government Area and focuses exclusively on their archaeological and historical relevance.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Ancient Road Networks: Pre-colonial pathways used for transportation and trade.

  2. Archaeological Relevance: The significance of material remains in understanding past cultures.

  3. Preservation: Efforts to maintain and protect historical infrastructures.
