Background of the Study
Cultural heritage sites in Okrika represent not only windows into the past but also untapped economic resources. The appraisal of these sites highlights their potential to stimulate local economies through tourism, cultural events, and heritage-driven enterprises. Recent research indicates that investment in the preservation and promotion of cultural landmarks can lead to significant socio-economic benefits, including job creation and infrastructural development (Efe, 2023). Moreover, local stakeholders are increasingly recognizing that sustainable heritage management can foster community pride and economic resilience (Okon, 2024). Studies integrating economic analysis with archaeological data have demonstrated that the valorization of heritage assets enhances regional competitiveness and attracts external investments (Udo, 2025). This study explores the multifaceted economic potential of cultural heritage sites, analyzing how strategic preservation and effective marketing can transform cultural resources into catalysts for development while preserving historical integrity.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the evident economic benefits of cultural heritage tourism, cultural sites in Okrika remain underdeveloped and underutilized. A lack of systematic appraisal, insufficient funding, and inadequate marketing strategies have led to missed opportunities for local economic growth. The disjunction between heritage conservation and economic planning has resulted in limited community benefits and an underexploited tourism potential. This study addresses these issues by evaluating the economic prospects of cultural heritage sites and proposing integrated approaches to stimulate sustainable development (Ekem, 2023).
