Background of the study
Sickle cell disease (SCD) remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, with genetic inheritance playing a central role in its prevalence. In Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, research indicates that inherited genetic mutations have contributed to the high incidence of SCD, affecting community health and socioeconomic dynamics (Udo, 2023). Traditional medical practices and modern genetic research converge in this context, creating a complex landscape for disease management and prevention. Recent advances in genetic screening and counseling have highlighted the need for targeted public health interventions that address the hereditary nature of the disease (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, socio-cultural factors, including marriage practices and community awareness, further influence the transmission dynamics of SCD. This study critically examines the impact of genetic inheritance on the prevalence of sickle cell disease, exploring both the biological and sociocultural determinants that contribute to its persistence in Ikpoba-Okha (Obi, 2025).

Statement of the problem
The high prevalence of sickle cell disease in Ikpoba-Okha is closely linked to genetic inheritance patterns that are compounded by limited community awareness and insufficient genetic counseling services. This situation poses a significant public health concern, as the hereditary transmission of SCD continues to affect the quality of life and economic stability of affected families. The study aims to analyze the genetic factors and socio-cultural influences that contribute to SCD prevalence, thereby identifying potential avenues for effective intervention and prevention (Udo, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the role of genetic inheritance in SCD prevalence.

  2. To examine socio-cultural factors influencing disease transmission.

  3. To recommend intervention strategies for reducing SCD incidence.

Research questions

  1. How does genetic inheritance contribute to SCD prevalence in Ikpoba-Okha?

  2. What socio-cultural factors influence the transmission of SCD?

  3. What interventions can reduce the incidence of SCD?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Genetic inheritance significantly influences SCD prevalence.

  2. Socio-cultural practices contribute to the transmission of SCD.

  3. Targeted intervention strategies can reduce SCD incidence.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of the genetic and socio-cultural factors driving sickle cell disease prevalence. Its findings will inform public health strategies and genetic counseling initiatives, aiming to improve community health outcomes in Ikpoba-Okha (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the impact of genetic inheritance on sickle cell disease prevalence in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area and does not extend to other genetic disorders or regions.

Definitions of terms

  1. Genetic inheritance: The transmission of genetic traits from parents to offspring.

  2. Sickle cell disease (SCD): A hereditary blood disorder characterized by abnormally shaped red blood cells.

  3. Genetic counseling: The process of advising individuals about the risks, consequences, and nature of genetic disorders.
