Background of the study
Traditional festivals in Ohaozara Local Government serve as vibrant platforms for celebrating cultural heritage and fostering inter-communal relationships. These festivals, characterized by colorful displays, ritual performances, and communal feasts, play an essential role in uniting diverse groups by reinforcing shared cultural values and historical narratives (Ifeoma, 2023). The communal participation in these festivals not only sustains indigenous traditions but also facilitates dialogue, mutual respect, and social integration among neighboring communities. Modern societal changes, including urbanization and globalization, have altered the dynamics of these festivals; however, they remain pivotal in mitigating ethnic tensions and promoting collective identity (Chukwu, 2024). Recent research underscores the potential of traditional festivals to serve as effective mechanisms for social cohesion, especially in areas where inter-communal conflicts have historically prevailed (Nneka, 2025). This study examines the multifaceted role of traditional festivals in strengthening community ties and explores the impact of these celebrations on social harmony in a rapidly evolving cultural landscape.

Statement of the problem
In Ohaozara Local Government, traditional festivals are increasingly challenged by modern influences that threaten their role in fostering inter-communal relationships. The commercialization and fragmentation of cultural events have led to diminished communal engagement and a weakening of social bonds. This study aims to address the problem of declining inter-communal solidarity and to investigate how traditional festivals can be revitalized to maintain their social integrative functions (Ifeoma, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the role of traditional festivals in promoting inter-communal relationships.

  2. To identify factors affecting festival participation and communal integration.

  3. To recommend strategies to enhance the social impact of traditional festivals.

Research questions

  1. How do traditional festivals promote inter-communal relationships in Ohaozara?

  2. What factors influence the effectiveness of these festivals in fostering social cohesion?

  3. What measures can revitalize traditional festivals to strengthen communal ties?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Traditional festivals significantly enhance inter-communal relationships.

  2. Modern influences have reduced the social impact of these festivals.

  3. Strategic interventions can improve festival efficacy in fostering unity.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the crucial role of traditional festivals in building social cohesion and fostering inter-communal relationships. Its outcomes will inform community leaders and policymakers on how to harness cultural festivals for sustainable social integration (Chukwu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the role of traditional festivals in fostering inter-communal relationships in Ohaozara Local Government and does not consider festivals in other regions.

Definitions of terms

  1. Traditional festivals: Culturally significant celebrations with ritualistic and communal components.

  2. Inter-communal relationships: Social bonds between different community groups.

  3. Social cohesion: The strength of relationships and the sense of solidarity among members of a community.
