Background of the study
The advent of social media has revolutionized communication worldwide, influencing how indigenous cultural knowledge is transmitted and preserved. In Ijebu North-East Local Government, social media platforms have emerged as modern conduits for sharing traditional narratives, rituals, and artistic expressions (Olusola, 2023). This digital shift has facilitated the rapid dissemination of cultural information, reaching younger generations and diaspora communities, yet it also poses challenges related to authenticity and context loss. Critics argue that while social media democratizes access to cultural knowledge, it may also lead to oversimplification or commercialization of indigenous traditions (Adefemi, 2024). Furthermore, the interplay between digital technologies and traditional cultural custodianship creates a dynamic environment where both positive and negative outcomes coexist. This study critically appraises how social media affects the transmission, preservation, and transformation of indigenous cultural knowledge in the region, balancing its potential to empower with the risks of cultural dilution (Taiwo, 2025).

Statement of the problem
The integration of social media into indigenous cultural knowledge transmission in Ijebu North-East has led to concerns over the authenticity and depth of cultural narratives. While these digital platforms enhance accessibility, they may also result in superficial representations of complex cultural traditions, thereby undermining the integrity of indigenous knowledge. This study addresses the challenge of balancing digital innovation with the preservation of traditional cultural authenticity (Olusola, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the role of social media in transmitting indigenous cultural knowledge.

  2. To evaluate the impact of digital platforms on cultural authenticity.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing effective cultural transmission.

Research questions

  1. How does social media influence the transmission of indigenous cultural knowledge?

  2. What are the challenges in maintaining cultural authenticity online?

  3. What measures can improve the quality of digital cultural dissemination?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Social media significantly affects the modes of cultural transmission.

  2. Digital platforms contribute to both the democratization and dilution of indigenous knowledge.

  3. Structured digital strategies can enhance cultural preservation.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the contemporary challenges of using social media to transmit indigenous cultural knowledge. Its findings will offer guidance for cultural practitioners and policymakers on leveraging digital platforms without compromising cultural authenticity (Adefemi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the influence of social media on indigenous cultural knowledge transmission in Ijebu North-East Local Government and excludes other regions or digital media forms.

Definitions of terms

  1. Social media: Digital platforms facilitating user-generated content sharing.

  2. Cultural knowledge transmission: The process of passing down traditional information.

  3. Authenticity: The genuineness and accuracy of cultural representations.
