Background of the study
The interaction between Islamic cultural practices and Yoruba traditional beliefs in Shagamu Local Government represents a unique cultural convergence that has shaped community identities over centuries. Historically, Islam introduced new theological perspectives and social customs that intermingled with indigenous Yoruba practices, leading to a hybrid cultural landscape (Ogunleye, 2023). This interplay has influenced religious rituals, social norms, and community governance, as both belief systems have coexisted and adapted to socio-cultural dynamics. The infusion of Islamic values has brought reforms in ethical conduct and communal relationships, yet it has also sparked debates regarding cultural dilution and identity preservation (Akinola, 2024). Contemporary scholars argue that understanding this influence is critical to appreciating how traditional Yoruba practices evolve in response to external cultural inputs (Suleiman, 2025). By critically examining the historical trajectory and current manifestations of this cultural synthesis, this study endeavors to elucidate the complexities inherent in reconciling divergent worldviews while fostering mutual respect and social cohesion.

Statement of the problem
The convergence of Islamic cultural practices with Yoruba traditional beliefs in Shagamu Local Government has created tensions and ambiguities in cultural identity. While the integration of Islamic values has introduced progressive social reforms, it has simultaneously raised concerns about the erosion of indigenous traditions. The challenge lies in balancing the acceptance of beneficial reforms with the preservation of core cultural values. This study aims to dissect these complexities and provide clarity on how both cultural influences can coexist without compromising the authenticity of Yoruba traditional beliefs (Ogunleye, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the influence of Islamic cultural practices on Yoruba traditions.

  2. To identify areas of convergence and divergence between the two belief systems.

  3. To propose frameworks for harmonious cultural integration.

Research questions

  1. How have Islamic practices influenced Yoruba traditional beliefs in Shagamu?

  2. What areas of cultural convergence are most significant?

  3. What strategies can foster mutual respect between the two cultures?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Islamic cultural practices have significantly influenced Yoruba rituals.

  2. There is a measurable convergence in ethical and social norms.

  3. Frameworks for cultural integration can enhance social cohesion.

Significance of the study
This study is significant in elucidating the dynamic interaction between Islamic and Yoruba cultural practices. Its findings will assist policymakers and cultural custodians in fostering a balanced approach to cultural integration, preserving indigenous values while embracing progressive influences (Akinola, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the influence of Islamic cultural practices on Yoruba traditional beliefs in Shagamu Local Government. It excludes other regions and religious influences.

Definitions of terms

  1. Islamic cultural practices: Customs and rituals derived from Islamic teachings.
