Background of the Study:
Social networking sites have emerged as essential tools for building and maintaining social capital by facilitating interpersonal connections, information sharing, and community support. In Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government, Lagos State, these platforms enable residents to connect, collaborate, and mobilize resources for communal development (Akinyele, 2023). The integration of social networking into daily life has led to increased participation in community activities, with users engaging in both personal and professional networks that foster trust and reciprocity (Olatunji, 2024). Moreover, these digital interactions provide a means for marginalized groups to access networks previously limited by geographical or social constraints, thus broadening the base of social capital. However, challenges such as privacy concerns, online harassment, and digital divides may impede the full potential of social networking in building robust community ties (Balogun, 2023). This study examines how social networking sites influence the development of social capital in Ifako-Ijaiye, considering both the enabling factors and the limitations of digital interaction.
Statement of the Problem:
Although social networking sites offer significant potential for building social capital, their effectiveness in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government is not well documented. Issues such as privacy, trust, and unequal access to digital resources may limit the positive impacts of these platforms on community bonding. This study aims to investigate these challenges and opportunities to provide a clearer picture of digital social capital formation (Akinyele, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the role of social networking sites in fostering social capital in Ifako-Ijaiye.
To identify challenges that hinder effective digital community building.
To recommend measures to enhance social capital through online networking.
Research Questions:
How do social networking sites contribute to building social capital in Ifako-Ijaiye?
What challenges affect the development of online community ties?
How can digital platforms be optimized to enhance social capital?
Research Hypotheses:
Social networking sites significantly enhance social capital in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government.
Privacy and trust concerns negatively affect online social capital formation.
Improved digital literacy promotes stronger community networks.
Significance of the Study:
The study will benefit community leaders and digital policymakers by providing strategies to leverage social networking for stronger community bonds and enhanced social capital in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government (Olatunji, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the role of social networking sites in fostering social capital in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government, Lagos State.
