Background of the study
Workplace conflict is an inevitable aspect of organizational life that can significantly impact employee performance and organizational culture. In Ikom, local government workers often encounter conflicts arising from differences in opinions, resource allocation, and administrative processes (Ejiogu, 2023). Effective conflict resolution strategies are essential to maintain a harmonious work environment and to ensure that disputes do not escalate into major disruptions. This study investigates the various conflict resolution techniques employed within local government settings, such as mediation, negotiation, and collaborative problem-solving (Ike, 2024). It also examines how these strategies influence overall organizational productivity and employee morale. Recent research highlights the importance of early conflict intervention and the role of leadership in fostering a culture of open communication and mutual respect (Akinola, 2023). By integrating theoretical frameworks with empirical evidence from local government workers, the study aims to identify best practices and propose actionable recommendations for improving conflict resolution processes in public institutions. The insights gained are expected to contribute to the development of more effective workplace policies and enhance the quality of public service delivery.

Statement of the problem
Local government workers in Ikom face recurring conflicts that adversely affect job performance and morale (Obi, 2023). Despite the adoption of various conflict resolution strategies, unresolved disputes continue to disrupt work processes and hinder productivity. The existing approaches appear to be insufficient in addressing the root causes of conflict, leading to prolonged tensions and inefficiencies. This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of current conflict resolution methods and identify areas for improvement, with the goal of fostering a more cohesive and efficient working environment (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the current conflict resolution strategies used by local government workers.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies in resolving workplace disputes.
  3. To recommend improvements for more effective conflict resolution.

Research questions:

  1. What conflict resolution strategies are currently employed in Ikom?
  2. How effective are these strategies in resolving workplace disputes?
  3. What measures can enhance the effectiveness of conflict resolution processes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Effective conflict resolution strategies improve workplace productivity.
  2. H₂: Inadequate conflict resolution leads to prolonged employee dissatisfaction.
  3. H₃: Training in conflict management enhances the effectiveness of resolution strategies.

Significance of the study
This study provides key insights into conflict resolution in public institutions, offering actionable recommendations to improve workplace harmony and efficiency. Its findings will guide policymakers and administrators in developing training programs and policies that reduce conflict and boost productivity among local government workers (Ifeoma, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining workplace conflict resolution strategies and their effectiveness among local government workers in Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State. It focuses solely on current practices within this setting.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Conflict Resolution: Methods used to resolve disputes and restore harmony.
  2. Workplace Conflict: Disagreements or disputes between employees or between employees and management.
  3. Local Government Workers: Employees employed in local government institutions.
