Background of the study
Workplace harassment remains a pervasive challenge that can significantly undermine employees’ mental health and productivity. In the education sector, particularly within secondary schools in Owerri Municipal, instances of harassment—from bullying to discriminatory behavior—are increasingly being reported (Nwanne, 2023). Such hostile work environments not only affect the psychological well-being of teachers and staff but also impair their ability to deliver quality education. This study investigates the prevalence and impact of workplace harassment on employee mental health and productivity in selected secondary schools. Emphasis is placed on understanding the underlying causes, such as power imbalances, lack of clear policies, and cultural factors that perpetuate abusive behaviors (Okoro, 2024). The research synthesizes data from employee surveys, interviews, and policy reviews to assess the extent of harassment and its consequences on job performance. By integrating contemporary theories on occupational stress with empirical evidence, the study seeks to propose interventions that can mitigate the negative impacts of harassment, thereby fostering a safer and more supportive work environment (Chukwu, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite efforts to enforce anti-harassment policies, many secondary schools in Owerri Municipal continue to struggle with workplace harassment, adversely affecting employees’ mental health and productivity (Eze, 2023). Victims of harassment often experience stress, anxiety, and reduced job performance, which in turn compromise the overall quality of education. The gap between policy implementation and actual practice has led to persistent challenges that need to be addressed. This study aims to identify the key factors contributing to harassment and to propose effective strategies for intervention (Nwankwo, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the prevalence of workplace harassment in selected secondary schools.
  2. To evaluate the impact of harassment on employee mental health and productivity.
  3. To recommend effective interventions to reduce harassment and support affected employees.

Research questions:

  1. What forms of workplace harassment are most common in secondary schools?
  2. How does harassment affect the mental health and productivity of employees?
  3. What interventions can effectively mitigate the negative impacts of harassment?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Workplace harassment significantly deteriorates employees’ mental health.
  2. H₂: There is a negative correlation between harassment and employee productivity.
  3. H₃: Effective intervention strategies can reduce the incidence of harassment.

Significance of the study
The study is significant as it addresses the detrimental effects of workplace harassment on mental health and productivity in educational settings. Its findings will inform school administrators and policymakers on effective measures to create a safer work environment, thereby improving overall educational outcomes. The research contributes to the literature on occupational health and safety (Obi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining workplace harassment and its impact on employees’ mental health and productivity in selected secondary schools within Owerri Municipal Local Government Area, Imo State. It does not extend to other sectors or geographic areas.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Workplace Harassment: Unwelcome conduct that creates a hostile work environment.
  2. Mental Health: The psychological and emotional well-being of an individual.
  3. Productivity: The efficiency and output of an individual or organization.
