Background of the Study :
Export performance in the agricultural sector is vital for enhancing foreign exchange earnings and supporting rural development. In Benue State, known as Nigeria’s “food basket,” policies from 2000 to 2020 have aimed to improve the export performance of agricultural products by enhancing production techniques, quality standards, and market access (Oluwaseun, 2023). Determinants such as infrastructure quality, government support, and international market trends play a significant role in shaping export performance. Empirical research indicates that improved production efficiency and favorable trade policies can significantly boost agricultural exports (Adeniyi, 2024). However, challenges such as inadequate storage facilities, poor transportation networks, and inconsistent policy implementation often hinder performance. This study investigates the determinants of export performance in Benue State’s agricultural sector through quantitative trade data analysis and qualitative interviews with farmers, exporters, and policymakers. The aim is to identify the key drivers and barriers to export growth, thereby informing policies that can enhance the competitiveness of Nigeria’s agricultural exports (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the rich agricultural potential of Benue State, export performance remains suboptimal due to infrastructural deficits, inconsistent policy support, and market access challenges (Oluwaseun, 2023). The disconnect between agricultural capacity and export outcomes raises concerns about the effectiveness of current strategies. This study seeks to identify the critical factors that determine export performance and assess the barriers that limit the full exploitation of Benue State’s agricultural potential. Understanding these determinants is essential for formulating targeted policy interventions that can boost export competitiveness and contribute to rural development.
Objectives of the Study:
1. To identify determinants of agricultural export performance in Benue State.
2. To evaluate the impact of infrastructural and policy factors on export outcomes.
3. To recommend policy measures to improve export competitiveness.
Research Questions:
1. What are the key determinants of export performance in Benue State’s agricultural sector?
2. How do infrastructural and policy factors affect export outcomes?
3. What interventions can enhance agricultural export performance?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Improved infrastructure positively affects export performance.
2. Government policy support significantly enhances export outcomes.
3. Market access improvements boost agricultural exports.
Significance of the Study (100 words):
This study is significant as it examines the determinants of export performance in the agricultural sector of Benue State. Its findings will help policymakers and industry stakeholders design effective interventions to enhance agricultural competitiveness, increase export earnings, and stimulate rural development. The research provides evidence-based recommendations to improve infrastructure, policy implementation, and market access (Oluwaseun, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on agricultural export performance in Benue State from 2000 to 2020. It does not cover other sectors or states and is limited by data availability.
Definitions of Terms:
1. Export Performance: The effectiveness of a sector in exporting goods.
2. Agricultural Sector: Industries involved in farming and food production.
3. Market Access: The ease with which products reach international markets.
