Background of the Study:
Cultural perceptions of infertility in Ibadan North Local Government, Oyo State, are deeply embedded in societal norms and values, significantly influencing healthcare-seeking behaviors. Infertility is often stigmatized and misunderstood, with traditional beliefs attributing it to supernatural causes or moral failings (Olagunju, 2023). Such perceptions deter many individuals from seeking timely medical interventions, leading them instead to rely on indigenous remedies or spiritual consultations. The societal pressure and associated stigma further compound the emotional distress of affected couples, reducing their willingness to engage with orthodox healthcare services (Abiola, 2024). Recent literature emphasizes the need to understand these cultural determinants in order to design effective educational and intervention programs that encourage the adoption of evidence-based treatments while respecting cultural sensitivities (Olajide, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
In Ibadan North, negative cultural perceptions of infertility hinder the timely uptake of modern healthcare interventions. The stigma associated with infertility often leads individuals to pursue unverified traditional remedies, resulting in delayed treatment and poorer health outcomes. This study aims to elucidate the impact of these cultural perceptions on healthcare-seeking behaviors and to propose strategies to overcome associated barriers (Olagunju, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess cultural perceptions of infertility.
  2. To evaluate how these perceptions influence healthcare-seeking behavior.
  3. To recommend culturally sensitive interventions to encourage modern treatment.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the prevalent cultural beliefs surrounding infertility?
  2. How do these beliefs affect individuals’ decisions to seek medical care?
  3. What interventions can alter negative perceptions and improve treatment uptake?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Negative cultural perceptions significantly reduce healthcare-seeking for infertility.
  2. Reliance on traditional remedies is associated with delayed modern treatment.
  3. Culturally sensitive interventions will increase the uptake of orthodox infertility treatments.

Significance of the Study:
This study will provide essential insights into the influence of cultural perceptions on infertility treatment behaviors. Its findings will help develop targeted interventions that bridge cultural beliefs with modern healthcare, improving outcomes in Ibadan North Local Government (Olagunju, 2023; Abiola, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Infertility: The inability to conceive after a prolonged period of regular, unprotected intercourse.
  • Cultural Perceptions: Beliefs and attitudes shaped by cultural norms and values.
  • Healthcare-Seeking Behavior: The process of seeking medical assistance for health issues.
