Background of the Study:
Cultural perceptions significantly influence tuberculosis (TB) treatment adherence in Calabar South Local Government, Cross River State. Traditional beliefs about illness causation, stigma, and the social implications of TB often affect how patients approach and adhere to prescribed treatments (Etuk, 2023). Many individuals may rely on traditional remedies or delay seeking medical attention due to fears of social ostracism and misinterpretation of TB symptoms. These cultural dimensions complicate public health efforts to control TB and necessitate a culturally informed approach to treatment adherence (Inyang, 2024). Recent research indicates that addressing cultural misconceptions through community education can improve adherence rates and health outcomes (Akanbi, 2025). This study investigates how cultural perceptions shape treatment behaviors and explores interventions that could enhance adherence among TB patients.

Statement of the Problem:
In Calabar South, deeply ingrained cultural beliefs and misconceptions about tuberculosis have resulted in suboptimal treatment adherence, thereby undermining TB control efforts. Patients’ reliance on traditional explanations and remedies often leads to delays in diagnosis and discontinuation of treatment. This situation poses a significant public health challenge that requires an in-depth evaluation of cultural factors affecting treatment adherence (Etuk, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To investigate the cultural perceptions influencing TB treatment adherence.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these perceptions on patient behavior.
  3. To propose culturally sensitive interventions to improve adherence.

Research Questions:

  1. What cultural beliefs affect TB treatment adherence?
  2. How do these perceptions influence patient compliance?
  3. What strategies can address cultural barriers to effective TB treatment?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Cultural beliefs significantly reduce TB treatment adherence.
  2. Misconceptions about TB contribute to treatment non-compliance.
  3. Culturally tailored interventions improve adherence among TB patients.

Significance of the Study:
This study offers valuable insights into how cultural perceptions affect TB treatment adherence, providing a basis for culturally sensitive interventions. The findings could significantly improve TB control efforts in Calabar South Local Government (Etuk, 2023; Inyang, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Tuberculosis (TB): A contagious bacterial infection primarily affecting the lungs.
  • Adherence: The extent to which patients follow prescribed treatment regimens.
  • Cultural Perceptions: Beliefs and attitudes shaped by cultural contexts.
