Background of the Study:
Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Edo State, prompting both biomedical and traditional health practitioners to explore effective treatment modalities. Many households in Oredo Local Government rely on herbal medicine as an accessible and culturally resonant alternative to conventional antimalarial drugs. Herbal remedies, prepared from locally available plants, have been used for generations to alleviate malaria symptoms and improve patient outcomes (Adebayo, 2023). Recent studies suggest that certain phytochemicals may possess antimalarial properties, yet standardized dosage and clinical validations remain limited (Okoro, 2024). The integration of indigenous knowledge with modern health practices has sparked debate on safety, efficacy, and quality control. In addition, socio-economic factors, accessibility issues, and community perceptions play significant roles in treatment choices. By critically evaluating herbal medicine’s contribution to malaria management, this study intends to bridge the gap between traditional practice and modern healthcare approaches, highlighting both potential benefits and risks. It also considers the challenges in regulating herbal formulations and the need for rigorous research to support their use as complementary therapies (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite widespread reliance on herbal remedies for malaria treatment in Oredo Local Government, there is a dearth of empirical evidence on their efficacy, safety, and standardization. Households often use these remedies without proper dosage guidelines, risking suboptimal treatment outcomes or adverse effects. The absence of robust clinical trials and quality control measures further complicates their integration into mainstream health strategies. This lack of reliable data poses a challenge for healthcare providers attempting to formulate effective public health policies, necessitating a comprehensive evaluation of herbal medicine in malaria treatment (Adebayo, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of herbal medicine in malaria treatment.
  2. To examine household perceptions and usage patterns of herbal remedies.
  3. To assess the potential integration of herbal and orthodox malaria treatments.

Research Questions:

  1. How effective are herbal medicines in alleviating malaria symptoms?
  2. What factors influence households’ reliance on herbal remedies?
  3. How can traditional and orthodox treatment approaches be integrated for optimal outcomes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Herbal medicines exhibit significant antimalarial effects compared to no treatment.
  2. Households with higher reliance on herbal remedies show distinct treatment outcomes.
  3. Integration of herbal and orthodox treatments improves overall malaria management.

Significance of the Study:
This study will provide critical insights into the role of herbal medicine in malaria management, potentially influencing health policy and community practices. It bridges the gap between traditional and modern healthcare approaches and informs strategies to enhance treatment efficacy and safety (Adebayo, 2023; Okoro, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Herbal Medicine: Plant-based treatments used for health management.
  • Malaria: A life-threatening disease caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted by mosquitoes.
  • Efficacy: The ability to produce the desired therapeutic outcome.
