Background of the study
Public investment in transportation is pivotal for bridging regional disparities by improving connectivity and facilitating the movement of goods and people. In Kaduna State, significant investments in transport infrastructure—such as road construction, railway development, and improved public transit systems—have been implemented between 2000 and 2020 to promote regional integration. Such investments are expected to reduce logistical costs, stimulate economic activities, and improve access to markets and services in less developed regions (Oluwaseun, 2023). Empirical studies indicate that effective transport infrastructure can lead to significant reductions in regional income disparities and enhance overall economic development (Ibrahim, 2023). However, challenges such as poor maintenance, funding shortages, and bureaucratic delays have sometimes limited the impact of these projects (Chinwe, 2024). This study investigates the role of public investment in transportation in reducing regional disparities in Kaduna State by evaluating project outcomes, identifying key challenges, and suggesting measures to optimize future investments.
Statement of the problem
Despite substantial public investment in transportation, regional disparities in Kaduna State persist due to inadequate project implementation, maintenance issues, and funding constraints (Ibrahim, 2023; Chinwe, 2024). These challenges limit the positive impact of transport infrastructure on economic integration and regional development. The study aims to examine the factors that impede the effectiveness of transport projects and to propose strategies to overcome these barriers, thereby ensuring that public investment translates into reduced regional inequalities.
