Background of the study
Digital transformation refers to the integration of digital technology into all areas of business, fundamentally changing how companies operate and deliver value. In Abuja, the manufacturing industry has experienced significant shifts from 2010 to 2020 due to the adoption of digital tools such as automation, data analytics, and cloud computing. These technologies have enabled manufacturers to streamline production processes, reduce costs, and improve product quality, thus enhancing competitiveness in global markets (Oluwaseun, 2023). The digital revolution in manufacturing has also fostered innovation and enabled real-time decision-making, leading to improved operational efficiency. However, challenges such as high implementation costs, skill shortages, and cybersecurity risks continue to pose obstacles. Recent research suggests that while digital transformation offers substantial benefits, its impact depends on supportive policies and effective change management (Chinwe, 2024; Ibrahim, 2025). This study investigates the role of digital transformation in revitalizing Nigeria’s manufacturing industry, focusing on its impact on productivity, competitiveness, and sustainable growth.

Statement of the problem
Despite the promising potential of digital transformation, Nigeria’s manufacturing industry in Abuja remains constrained by barriers such as inadequate digital infrastructure, limited skilled labor, and cybersecurity vulnerabilities (Oluwaseun, 2023; Chinwe, 2024). These challenges reduce the full benefits of technology adoption and hinder overall industry revitalization. The study aims to identify these critical barriers and propose strategies to enhance digital integration within the manufacturing sector, thereby improving productivity and competitiveness.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of digital transformation on manufacturing performance.
  2. To identify challenges in the adoption of digital technologies.
  3. To recommend measures for accelerating digital integration.

Research questions:

  1. How has digital transformation affected manufacturing efficiency in Abuja?
  2. What barriers hinder digital technology adoption?
  3. What policy measures can support digital integration in manufacturing?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Digital transformation significantly improves manufacturing productivity.
  2. Infrastructure and skill deficits limit technology adoption.
  3. Enhanced digital policies promote industry revitalization.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates how digital transformation can revitalize Nigeria’s manufacturing industry in Abuja. The insights will help policymakers and industry stakeholders design strategies to overcome digital adoption challenges, thereby fostering innovation, productivity, and competitive advantage in the manufacturing sector (Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining digital transformation in Abuja’s manufacturing industry, focusing on technology adoption, infrastructure, and skill development.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Digital Transformation: The integration of digital technologies into business operations.
  2. Manufacturing Industry: The sector involved in producing goods using labor, machinery, and technology.
  3. Productivity: The efficiency with which inputs are converted into outputs.
