Background of the Study :
Economic policies are instrumental in shaping labor markets and mitigating unemployment. In Lagos State, a hub of commercial and industrial activities, various policy initiatives have been implemented between 2000 and 2020 to address unemployment challenges (Oluwaseun, 2023). These policies include fiscal incentives, labor market reforms, and skills development programs aimed at creating job opportunities and reducing unemployment rates. The effectiveness of these measures is crucial for enhancing economic stability and social welfare. Empirical studies have shown that proactive economic policies can stimulate job creation by encouraging private sector investment and facilitating entrepreneurship (Chinwe, 2024). However, persistent issues such as rapid urbanization, skills mismatches, and policy inconsistencies have limited the impact of these initiatives. This study evaluates the role of economic policy in mitigating unemployment in Lagos State by analyzing employment data, policy frameworks, and feedback from industry stakeholders. The objective is to identify both successes and shortcomings of current policies and provide recommendations for more effective unemployment reduction strategies (Adeniyi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite various economic policies, unemployment in Lagos State remains a persistent challenge. The disconnect between policy interventions and labor market realities—characterized by skills mismatches and rapid urbanization—has resulted in suboptimal job creation (Oluwaseun, 2023). The gap between policy objectives and actual employment outcomes indicates that current measures may not be effectively addressing the root causes of unemployment. This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of economic policies in reducing unemployment and to identify the factors that hinder their success, providing insights for refining strategies to better meet labor market needs.
Objectives of the Study:
1. To evaluate the impact of economic policies on unemployment in Lagos State.
2. To identify factors contributing to persistent unemployment.
3. To propose policy recommendations for more effective job creation.
Research Questions:
1. How have economic policies influenced unemployment in Lagos State?
2. What are the main factors hindering effective job creation?
3. What policy measures can better mitigate unemployment?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Economic policies significantly reduce unemployment.
2. Skills mismatches negatively affect job creation.
3. Enhanced policy measures can lead to improved employment outcomes.
