Background of the Study :

Public infrastructure investment is a key driver of economic development and regional integration. In Kaduna State, investments in transportation, utilities, and social infrastructure have been critical in reducing regional disparities and fostering economic growth between urban and rural areas. Between 2000 and 2020, government expenditure aimed at upgrading roads, energy supply, and public facilities has sought to bridge the development gap and promote balanced regional progress (Okonkwo, 2023). Research indicates that strategic infrastructure investments can stimulate local economies, attract private investment, and improve overall productivity (Adeniyi, 2024). However, challenges such as project delays, fund misallocation, and administrative inefficiencies have limited the effectiveness of these investments. This study examines how public infrastructure investments have influenced regional economic disparities in Kaduna State by analyzing expenditure data, development indicators, and regional economic performance. The goal is to identify factors that contribute to uneven development and propose policy recommendations for more equitable infrastructure spending, thereby enhancing regional cohesion and economic integration (Chukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Despite substantial investments in infrastructure, Kaduna State continues to exhibit significant regional economic disparities. Inefficient project management, corruption, and unequal allocation of funds have hindered the intended benefits of public investments. As a result, certain areas remain underdeveloped, perpetuating regional inequality and hampering overall economic progress. This study aims to identify the barriers that limit the effectiveness of infrastructure investments and assess their impact on regional disparities. Addressing these issues is critical for formulating policies that promote more balanced and inclusive regional development (Okonkwo, 2023; Adeniyi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the impact of public infrastructure investment on regional disparities.

2. To identify key challenges in project implementation.

3. To propose strategies for more equitable infrastructure spending.

Research Questions:

1. How does public infrastructure investment affect regional economic disparities?

2. What factors impede effective investment outcomes?

3. What policy measures can reduce regional inequality?

Research Hypotheses:

1. H1: Public infrastructure investment reduces regional disparities.

2. H2: Administrative inefficiencies exacerbate inequality.

3. H3: Equitable investment strategies enhance regional cohesion.

Significance of the Study (100 words):

This study offers insights into the role of public infrastructure investment in mitigating regional disparities in Kaduna State. Its findings will help policymakers refine investment strategies to achieve more balanced economic development, thereby promoting inclusive growth and reducing inequality (Chukwu, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

The study is confined to Kaduna State from 2000–2020, focusing on infrastructure investment and regional economic indicators. Limitations include data quality and external influences.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Public Infrastructure Investment: Government spending on physical facilities and services.

2. Regional Economic Disparities: Unequal economic development across different regions.

3. Kaduna State: A Nigerian state serving as the case study.
