Background of the study
This study explores two interrelated aspects of language use in Nigeria. First, it examines how linguistic diversity influences morphological productivity in indigenous languages, focusing on the capacity to generate new word forms through processes such as affixation and compounding. Exposure to multiple languages and dialects fosters creative morphological innovations that enrich a language’s lexicon (Udo, 2023). Second, the study investigates how sentence structure variations affect comprehension among Yoruba speakers in Ibadan. Variations in syntax—such as differences in clause order and sentence complexity—can significantly influence understanding, particularly in a multilingual context where speakers navigate between traditional structures and modern influences (Adeyemi, 2024). Data are collected through corpus analysis of indigenous texts and comprehension tests administered to Yoruba speakers. The study seeks to correlate linguistic diversity with increased morphological productivity and to assess how syntactic variations impact reading comprehension and overall communication effectiveness (Olu, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite evidence that linguistic diversity drives morphological innovation and affects syntactic comprehension, systematic research combining these areas is limited. Preliminary observations indicate that indigenous languages exhibit high morphological productivity in diverse linguistic settings, while Yoruba speakers in Ibadan face comprehension challenges due to sentence structure variations (Udo, 2023). This dual gap hinders language planning and educational efforts aimed at enhancing both lexical creativity and comprehension accuracy (Adeyemi, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate morphological productivity across diverse indigenous languages.
To assess the impact of sentence structure variations on comprehension among Yoruba speakers.
To correlate linguistic diversity with syntactic and morphological outcomes.
Research questions:
How does linguistic diversity influence morphological productivity?
What sentence structure variations affect comprehension among Yoruba speakers?
How are morphological and syntactic variations interrelated?
Research Hypotheses:
Greater linguistic diversity increases morphological productivity.
Complex sentence structures reduce comprehension accuracy.
There is a significant correlation between morphological innovation and syntactic variation.
Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant because it bridges research on morphological productivity and syntactic comprehension, offering comprehensive insights into how linguistic diversity shapes language use. The findings will inform educators and policymakers to develop balanced curricula that promote both creative word formation and effective communication among Yoruba speakers (Udo, 2023; Olu, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to indigenous languages and Yoruba in Ibadan; excludes non-linguistic factors.
Definitions of terms:
Morphological Productivity: The ability to generate new words.
Sentence Structure Variations: Differences in syntactic organization.
Comprehension: The ability to understand written or spoken language.
