Background of the study
Cultural festivals are vibrant manifestations of tradition and creativity, playing a vital role in language evolution. In Ogun, Yoruba cultural festivals serve as a platform for morphological innovation, where traditional language is blended with contemporary influences to create new expressions. This study examines how festive events influence morphological processes in Yoruba, focusing on the emergence of novel affixation, compounding, and reduplication patterns (Ogunlola, 2023). During festivals, language becomes a dynamic medium for expressing cultural identity, humor, and social commentary. Fieldwork, including recordings of festival performances and interviews with cultural practitioners, reveals that these events encourage creative linguistic expression that may eventually permeate everyday speech (Adeyemi, 2024). The study analyzes how these innovative morphological forms contribute to the evolution of Yoruba and strengthen community bonds. It also explores the role of digital media in disseminating festival-inspired language innovations, thereby reinforcing their impact on the broader linguistic landscape (Udo, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Although cultural festivals in Ogun are observed to stimulate morphological innovation in Yoruba, systematic research on this phenomenon is scarce. Preliminary findings suggest that festival-related language innovations are significant; however, their long-term impact on everyday language remains unclear (Ogunlola, 2023). This lack of empirical data limits the ability of cultural and language policymakers to harness these innovations for language preservation and educational purposes (Adeyemi, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To document morphological innovations during Yoruba festivals.
To analyze the impact of these innovations on everyday language.
To assess the role of media in spreading festival language.
Research questions:
What innovative morphological forms emerge during festivals?
How do these forms influence standard Yoruba?
What role does digital media play?
Research Hypotheses:
Cultural festivals significantly foster morphological innovation.
Innovations during festivals influence everyday language use.
Media exposure amplifies these effects.
Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it explores the influence of cultural festivals on Yoruba morphological innovation, providing insights for cultural preservation and language planning. The findings will assist educators and policymakers in leveraging cultural events to enrich and sustain Yoruba linguistic heritage (Ogunlola, 2023; Udo, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to morphological innovations during Yoruba festivals in Ogun and does not cover other cultural contexts.
Definitions of terms:
Cultural Festivals: Public celebrations that reflect traditional customs.
Morphological Innovation: New word-formation processes.
Yoruba: An indigenous language of southwestern Nigeria.
