Background of the study
Digital communication has dramatically transformed language use, particularly in urban centers and professional settings. This study explores how digital media, including social networks, messaging apps, and online platforms, influences morphological innovation in Nigerian English. The language is evolving rapidly as digital communication encourages brevity, creativity, and the adoption of new word-formation strategies such as novel affixation and compounding (Okeke, 2023). Nigerian English, already a hybrid language shaped by indigenous and colonial influences, is further modified by digital trends. Digital communication fosters an environment where informal and creative forms become mainstream, altering traditional morphological boundaries (Akinyemi, 2024). This research employs corpus analysis of online texts and interviews with digital users to document emergent morphological patterns. By examining the interplay between digital communication and word formation, the study aims to assess whether these innovations represent temporary trends or indicate a lasting transformation in Nigerian English (Eze, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Although digital communication is widely recognized for driving linguistic change, its specific impact on the morphological structure of Nigerian English remains underexplored. Preliminary studies indicate that digital media contributes to innovative word formation; however, systematic evidence is limited (Okeke, 2023). This gap poses challenges for language educators and policymakers seeking to understand and manage the evolution of Nigerian English in the digital age. The variability in digital usage and the rapid pace of change further complicate efforts to document these morphological innovations (Akinyemi, 2024). Addressing this issue is crucial for determining whether these changes are permanent features of Nigerian English or merely transient phenomena (Eze, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To document morphological innovations in Nigerian English driven by digital communication.
To analyze new word-formation patterns emerging online.
To evaluate the long-term impact of digital media on language structure.
Research questions:
What morphological innovations are evident in Nigerian English digital communication?
How do digital platforms influence word formation?
What is the permanence of these innovations?
Research Hypotheses:
Digital communication significantly fosters morphological innovation in Nigerian English.
Online word-formation processes differ from traditional patterns.
The impact of digital media on morphology is long-lasting.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it examines the role of digital communication in shaping Nigerian English morphology, providing insights for educators and policymakers. Its findings will help manage language evolution in the digital era (Okeke, 2023; Eze, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to analyzing morphological innovation in Nigerian English through digital media and does not include other linguistic domains.
Definitions of terms:
Digital Communication: The exchange of information via electronic platforms.
Morphological Innovation: New patterns of word formation.
Nigerian English: A localized variety of English in Nigeria.
