Background of the Study :

Export promotion strategies are central to enhancing a country’s trade performance by improving market access, increasing competitiveness, and diversifying export portfolios. In Nigeria, the Ministry of Trade has implemented various initiatives between 2000 and 2020 to support exporters through incentives, capacity-building programs, and market development activities (Okonkwo, 2023). These strategies aim to reduce trade barriers and provide technical assistance to firms, thus stimulating export growth and contributing to overall economic development. Empirical evidence suggests that effective export promotion can lead to increased foreign exchange earnings, job creation, and industrial diversification (Adeniyi, 2024). However, challenges such as bureaucratic delays, inadequate infrastructure, and inconsistent policy implementation have sometimes limited these outcomes. This study assesses the impact of export promotion strategies on Nigeria’s trade performance by analyzing export data, policy effectiveness, and sectoral growth. The goal is to identify the factors that enhance or constrain export performance and to propose measures for improving trade competitiveness (Chukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the implementation of various export promotion strategies, Nigeria’s trade performance remains suboptimal. Inconsistencies in policy execution, infrastructural challenges, and market access issues have impeded the expected growth in exports. This disconnect between policy intent and export outcomes raises concerns about the effectiveness of current strategies. The study seeks to determine the impact of these export promotion measures on trade performance and to identify key obstacles that hinder their success. Addressing these issues is essential for formulating more effective trade policies that can boost Nigeria’s export capacity and overall economic growth (Okonkwo, 2023; Adeniyi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the impact of export promotion strategies on trade performance.

2. To identify challenges affecting policy implementation.

3. To recommend measures to improve export competitiveness.

Research Questions:

1. How effective are export promotion strategies in enhancing trade performance?

2. What are the main challenges in policy execution?

3. What improvements can optimize export outcomes?

Research Hypotheses:

1. H1: Export promotion strategies positively influence trade performance.

2. H2: Infrastructural and bureaucratic challenges reduce policy effectiveness.

3. H3: Policy reforms can significantly boost export competitiveness.

Significance of the Study (100 words):

This study assesses the impact of export promotion strategies on Nigeria’s trade performance. Its findings will provide actionable insights for the Ministry of Trade and policymakers to enhance export policies and address structural challenges. Improving export competitiveness is critical for achieving sustainable economic growth and reducing trade deficits (Chukwu, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

The study is limited to evaluating export promotion strategies and their impact on Nigeria’s trade performance from 2000–2020, focusing on policy and export data analysis.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Export Promotion Strategies: Government initiatives to boost international sales of domestic products.

2. Trade Performance: The effectiveness of a country’s export activities.

3. Ministry of Trade: The government agency responsible for trade policy in Nigeria.
