Background of the study
Morpheme structure, the smallest units of meaning in a language, plays a crucial role in vocabulary development. In Yoruba, a language rich in morphological complexity, understanding how children acquire and use morphemes is key to comprehending their overall language development. This study investigates the impact of morpheme structure on vocabulary growth among Yoruba children in Ibadan. It examines how children internalize morphological rules and utilize affixes, compounds, and reduplication in forming new words (Adeyemi, 2023). The research builds on recent findings that highlight the importance of morphological awareness in early literacy and cognitive development (Ogunleye, 2024). In the dynamic linguistic environment of Ibadan, children are exposed to both traditional language use and modern influences through media and schooling. This dual exposure provides a unique context for studying how morpheme structure facilitates vocabulary expansion and semantic comprehension (Akinola, 2025). By combining experimental tasks with naturalistic observations, the study aims to document the strategies children employ in deciphering complex word forms and the subsequent impact on their overall lexical development.

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized significance of morpheme structure in language development, there is limited research on how it specifically influences vocabulary acquisition among Yoruba children in Ibadan. Educators and linguists have observed considerable variability in the rate of vocabulary development, which may be linked to differences in morphological awareness (Adeyemi, 2023). The lack of systematic investigation into the interplay between morpheme structure and vocabulary growth hinders the formulation of effective language teaching strategies. Additionally, modern influences from digital media and formal education may alter traditional patterns of morphological learning, further complicating this relationship (Ogunleye, 2024). Addressing this gap is crucial for developing curricula that support robust vocabulary development and promote deeper understanding of Yoruba morphological structures (Akinola, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

To examine the role of morpheme structure in vocabulary development among Yoruba children.

To analyze the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical growth.

To identify strategies that enhance morpheme-based vocabulary acquisition.

Research questions:

How does morpheme structure influence vocabulary development in Yoruba children?

What is the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical growth?

Which instructional methods effectively promote morpheme-based vocabulary acquisition?

Research Hypotheses:

A strong understanding of morpheme structure significantly enhances vocabulary development.

Morphological awareness is positively correlated with lexical growth among Yoruba children.

Instructional strategies that emphasize morpheme analysis improve vocabulary acquisition.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it elucidates the role of morpheme structure in the vocabulary development of Yoruba children, providing insights that can improve language instruction and curriculum design. The findings will benefit educators, linguists, and policymakers seeking to enhance early language learning (Adeyemi, 2023; Akinola, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the impact of morpheme structure on vocabulary development among Yoruba children in Ibadan. It focuses exclusively on morphological and lexical aspects without addressing broader language skills.

Definitions of terms:

Morpheme: The smallest grammatical unit in a language that carries meaning.

Vocabulary Development: The process by which individuals acquire and expand their lexicon.

Morphological Awareness: The recognition and understanding of the structure and meaning of morphemes.
