Background of the Study:
Masquerade festivals in Ogbaru Local Government are emblematic of the region’s rich cultural heritage. These festivals serve as vibrant expressions of spirituality, art, and community identity, where elaborate costumes and symbolic performances communicate ancestral narratives (Nnadi, 2023). Beyond their aesthetic appeal, masquerade festivals play a critical role in preserving folklore, transmitting cultural values, and reinforcing social norms (Chukwu, 2024). In recent years, modern influences and commercialization have begun to challenge the authenticity of these traditions (Onyekachi, 2025). This study evaluates the cultural significance of masquerade festivals and examines how they contribute to community cohesion and the preservation of indigenous traditions in a rapidly modernizing society (Nnadi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite their cultural importance, masquerade festivals in Ogbaru are threatened by commercialization and modern influences that dilute their traditional significance. The erosion of authentic cultural expression and diminished community engagement jeopardize the continuity of these festivals (Nnadi, 2023). This study seeks to identify the factors undermining the cultural significance of masquerade festivals and to propose measures to safeguard their traditional essence (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the cultural significance of masquerade festivals in Ogbaru.

  2. To identify factors influencing the authenticity of these festivals.

  3. To recommend measures for preserving the traditional essence of masquerade festivals.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the cultural significance of masquerade festivals in Ogbaru?

  2. What factors contribute to the dilution of traditional masquerade practices?

  3. How can the authenticity of masquerade festivals be preserved?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Masquerade festivals play a significant role in preserving cultural heritage.

  2. Modern influences negatively impact the authenticity of masquerade traditions.

  3. Community-led initiatives can enhance the preservation of masquerade festivals.

Significance of the Study:
This study emphasizes the cultural importance of masquerade festivals in maintaining community identity and heritage. Its findings will assist policymakers and cultural custodians in developing strategies to preserve authentic cultural expressions (Nnadi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to masquerade festivals in Ogbaru Local Government, Anambra State, focusing exclusively on their cultural significance. Limitations include subjective interpretations and reliance on historical accounts.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Masquerade Festivals: Cultural events featuring masked performers symbolizing spiritual and ancestral identities.

  2. Cultural Heritage: The traditions, customs, and artifacts that define a community’s identity.

  3. Authenticity: The genuine representation of traditional cultural practices.
