Background of the Study
Mass killings generate a large volume of human remains that require systematic and sensitive forensic investigation. In Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State, forensic anthropology is pivotal in analyzing skeletal remains recovered from mass killing sites. By employing techniques such as trauma analysis, age and sex estimation, and identification through unique skeletal markers, forensic anthropologists can reconstruct the events leading to mass casualties (Oluwafemi, 2023). Recent advancements in 3D imaging and computerized reconstruction have improved the accuracy of such analyses, providing critical data for both judicial investigations and historical documentation (Afolabi, 2024). However, the complexity of mass killings, often involving commingled remains and environmental degradation, poses significant challenges. This study evaluates the effectiveness of current forensic methods, identifies operational shortcomings, and explores innovative approaches to enhance skeletal analysis in mass killing investigations (Adesola, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Owo, the analysis of skeletal remains from mass killings is hindered by the challenges of commingled remains, severe fragmentation, and environmental degradation (Adesola, 2025). These factors complicate the accurate determination of identity and cause of death, thereby affecting legal proceedings and historical records. Limited forensic resources and inconsistent methodological practices further exacerbate the problem. This study seeks to identify the shortcomings in current forensic practices and propose improved methodologies to enhance the accuracy and reliability of skeletal analyses in mass killing investigations (Oluwafemi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate forensic anthropological methods used in analyzing skeletal remains from mass killings.
To identify challenges associated with commingled and degraded remains.
To propose methodological improvements for enhanced skeletal analysis.
Research Questions:
How effective are current forensic methods in analyzing skeletal remains from mass killings?
What challenges arise in the recovery and analysis of fragmented remains?
What improvements can optimize forensic analysis in mass killing investigations?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Advanced 3D imaging significantly improves skeletal analysis accuracy.
H2: Environmental degradation negatively impacts the identification of remains.
H3: Standardized forensic protocols enhance the overall reliability of skeletal analyses.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it contributes to the refinement of forensic anthropology in mass killing investigations. Its findings will support forensic practitioners and legal authorities by providing improved analytical techniques and standardized protocols, ultimately ensuring accurate victim identification and contributing to justice and historical accountability (Afolabi, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the forensic anthropological approaches used in analyzing skeletal remains from mass killings in Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State. It does not extend to other forms of mass casualty investigations.
Definitions of Terms:
Mass Killings: Incidents involving the intentional killing of multiple individuals.
Skeletal Analysis: The examination of bone remains to deduce biological and traumatic information.
Forensic Anthropology: The scientific application of anthropology in legal investigations.
