Background of the Study
Archaeology plays an increasingly important role in urban planning, particularly in Ado Ekiti Local Government Area, Ekiti State, where historical heritage intersects with modern development. Excavated sites and cultural artifacts provide planners with essential data regarding land use, cultural landscapes, and historical settlement patterns (Olayinka, 2023). This information can guide the integration of heritage conservation into urban expansion projects and infrastructural development (Adekunle, 2024). As cities expand, preserving archaeological sites ensures that urban growth is informed by historical context, preventing the loss of irreplaceable cultural assets. Local governments are now incorporating archaeological surveys into planning processes to identify areas of historical significance and mitigate potential damage during construction activities. Moreover, integrating archaeological knowledge can enhance community identity and contribute to sustainable urban development by fostering a sense of continuity between past and present (Folorunsho, 2023). This study investigates the role of archaeological evidence in shaping urban planning decisions in Ado Ekiti, emphasizing the benefits of preserving historical layers within modern urban landscapes and proposing guidelines for harmonizing development with heritage conservation (Tunde, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Urban development in Ado Ekiti has often led to the inadvertent destruction of archaeological sites, resulting in a loss of historical and cultural heritage (Adesola, 2023). The lack of integrated planning approaches that consider archaeological data exacerbates this problem, as new developments frequently ignore the historical significance of certain areas. Inadequate collaboration between urban planners and archaeologists has further contributed to this oversight, compromising the potential for sustainable heritage conservation. This study addresses the need for comprehensive urban planning frameworks that incorporate archaeological findings to protect cultural resources while facilitating modern development (Babatunde, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the incorporation of archaeological data in urban planning processes.

  • To evaluate the impact of urban development on archaeological sites in Ado Ekiti.

  • To propose integrated planning guidelines that preserve historical heritage.

Research Questions:

  • How is archaeological evidence currently used in urban planning in Ado Ekiti?

  • What are the effects of urban development on local archaeological sites?

  • Which planning strategies can best integrate heritage conservation with modern development?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Incorporating archaeological data improves urban planning outcomes.

  • H2: Urban development significantly impacts the preservation of archaeological sites.

  • H3: Integrated planning guidelines can effectively balance development and heritage conservation.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant for urban planners, archaeologists, and policymakers by demonstrating the benefits of integrating archaeological evidence into urban development. Its findings will promote sustainable planning practices that protect cultural heritage while accommodating growth. The research contributes to a balanced approach that honors historical continuity in the rapidly evolving urban landscape of Ado Ekiti (Folasade, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to investigating the role of archaeology in urban planning in Ado Ekiti Local Government Area, Ekiti State, focusing solely on heritage conservation within urban development frameworks without addressing rural planning issues.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Urban Planning: The process of designing and regulating the use of spaces in urban areas.

  • Archaeological Evidence: Material remains that offer insights into past human activities.

  • Heritage Conservation: Strategies and practices aimed at preserving cultural and historical assets.
