Background of the Study
Deforestation in Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, has become a critical environmental issue with significant repercussions for archaeological sites. The rapid removal of forest cover for agricultural expansion, logging, and urban development has exposed many archaeological sites to erosion, vandalism, and weathering (Ife, 2023). These sites, which include ancient habitation areas, ritual grounds, and burial sites, are highly vulnerable to environmental degradation once protective forest canopies are removed (Emeka, 2024). As natural habitats diminish, the physical integrity of archaeological materials deteriorates, resulting in irreversible loss of cultural and historical information. Local communities are increasingly aware of the detrimental impacts of deforestation on their heritage, prompting calls for sustainable land management practices. This study examines the extent to which deforestation has affected archaeological sites in Ikom, evaluates the interplay between environmental and cultural factors, and highlights the urgency for integrated conservation measures. By linking environmental sustainability with heritage preservation, the research aims to propose policy interventions that mitigate the adverse effects of deforestation on archaeological resources (Chinwe, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Deforestation in Ikom has accelerated the deterioration of archaeological sites, leading to the loss of valuable cultural data (Nnamdi, 2023). The removal of forest cover exposes sites to erosional forces, vandalism, and weathering, compromising their integrity. Current conservation efforts are inadequate to counter these effects, and there is a significant gap in research addressing the specific impact of deforestation on archaeological heritage. This study seeks to identify the extent of environmental damage and propose effective conservation strategies to safeguard the archaeological record from further degradation (Okechukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of deforestation on archaeological site preservation.

  • To evaluate the correlation between forest loss and site degradation.

  • To propose conservation strategies integrating environmental and heritage management.

Research Questions:

  • How does deforestation affect the preservation of archaeological sites in Ikom?

  • What are the primary environmental factors contributing to site degradation?

  • Which integrated conservation measures can mitigate deforestation impacts on heritage sites?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Deforestation significantly accelerates the degradation of archaeological sites.

  • H2: There is a direct correlation between forest cover loss and site deterioration.

  • H3: Integrated conservation strategies can effectively mitigate the adverse impacts of deforestation.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant for environmental planners, archaeologists, and conservationists by linking deforestation impacts to heritage degradation. Its findings will inform sustainable land management and heritage preservation policies, ensuring that archaeological sites in Ikom are protected from environmental harm. The research emphasizes the need for integrated strategies that address both ecological sustainability and cultural conservation (Uche, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the impact of deforestation on archaeological sites in Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, focusing solely on the relationship between environmental degradation and heritage preservation without addressing broader deforestation issues.
