Background of the Study
Social media addiction has emerged as a growing concern, particularly among students whose academic performance may be adversely affected by excessive online engagement. In Asaba, Delta State, students increasingly spend significant hours on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, often at the expense of their academic responsibilities (Eze, 2023). Research indicates that prolonged social media use can lead to distraction, reduced concentration, and diminished study habits, thereby negatively impacting academic outcomes (Okafor, 2024). Moreover, social media addiction is associated with psychological stress and sleep deprivation, further impairing cognitive function and academic performance (Uzo, 2025). This study examines the effect of social media addiction on the academic performance of students in Asaba by investigating usage patterns, time management, and study habits. The aim is to provide evidence-based recommendations to help students balance digital engagement with academic commitments.
Statement of the Problem
Excessive social media usage among students in Asaba has raised concerns regarding its negative impact on academic performance. Many students struggle with managing their time, leading to lower grades and reduced academic engagement (Nwosu, 2023). The addictive nature of social media distracts students from their studies and contributes to poor time management. This study seeks to identify the specific ways in which social media addiction affects academic performance and to propose effective interventions that can mitigate these adverse effects, thereby enhancing students' academic success (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the extent of social media addiction among students.
To examine the relationship between social media use and academic performance.
To recommend strategies to mitigate the negative impact of social media addiction on academics.
Research Questions:
How prevalent is social media addiction among students in Asaba?
What is the impact of social media addiction on academic performance?
What strategies can reduce the negative effects of excessive social media use on academics?
Research Hypotheses:
Social media addiction is negatively correlated with academic performance.
Excessive time on social media reduces study time and concentration.
Interventions promoting time management improve academic outcomes among addicted students.
Significance of the Study
This study provides important insights into how social media addiction impacts students' academic performance and offers practical recommendations for educational institutions and policymakers. The findings aim to help mitigate the adverse effects of excessive digital engagement, ultimately promoting better academic outcomes and healthier social media usage patterns (Adewale, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to students in Asaba Local Government and focuses exclusively on the impact of social media addiction on academic performance.
Definitions of Terms:
Social Media Addiction: Excessive, compulsive use of social networking platforms that interferes with daily activities.
Academic Performance: Measurable outcomes of students’ educational achievements.
