Background of the Study
Archaeology plays an instrumental role in deciphering the structures and practices of pre-colonial governance. In Ile-Ife, regarded as the cradle of Yoruba civilization, archaeological findings provide crucial insights into traditional administrative systems, political hierarchies, and social organization (Ogunyemi, 2023). This study investigates how material remains such as palaces, artifacts, and ceremonial objects contribute to our understanding of governance structures in pre-colonial societies. The interplay between archaeological evidence and oral traditions offers a comprehensive view of how power was negotiated, maintained, and transformed over time (Adebola, 2024). By examining excavation reports, historical records, and contemporary analyses, the research highlights the complexity and sophistication of pre-colonial governance. The study further discusses how these ancient systems continue to influence modern political and cultural identities in Ile-Ife, providing lessons for current governance practices (Ifeanyi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
There is a paucity of integrated research linking archaeological evidence with the administrative practices of pre-colonial Ile-Ife. The fragmented nature of available data limits the full reconstruction of traditional governance systems, hindering both academic inquiry and community understanding (Adegoke, 2023). This study aims to address this gap through a comprehensive archaeological investigation.

Objectives of the Study

  • To document archaeological evidence related to pre-colonial governance in Ile-Ife.

  • To analyze the structure and function of traditional administrative systems.

  • To correlate archaeological findings with oral traditions of governance.

Research Questions

  • What archaeological evidence exists regarding pre-colonial governance in Ile-Ife?

  • How did traditional governance structures operate in the pre-colonial era?

  • How do oral traditions complement the archaeological record?

Research Hypotheses

  • Archaeological evidence significantly informs the understanding of pre-colonial governance.

  • Traditional governance in Ile-Ife was complex and multifaceted.

  • Integrating archaeological and oral data provides a holistic view of historical governance.

Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the reconstruction of pre-colonial governance, enhancing the understanding of traditional political systems and informing contemporary cultural identity and policy development (Akinola, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is confined to examining archaeological evidence of pre-colonial governance in Ile-Ife. It does not extend to other aspects of pre-colonial life or comparative studies with other regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pre-colonial Governance: Traditional political and administrative systems before colonial influence.

  • Archaeological Evidence: Material remains that inform historical narratives.

  • Oral Traditions: Verbal histories passed down through generations.
