Background of the Study
Archaeology plays an instrumental role in deciphering the structures and practices of pre-colonial governance. In Ile-Ife, regarded as the cradle of Yoruba civilization, archaeological findings provide crucial insights into traditional administrative systems, political hierarchies, and social organization (Ogunyemi, 2023). This study investigates how material remains such as palaces, artifacts, and ceremonial objects contribute to our understanding of governance structures in pre-colonial societies. The interplay between archaeological evidence and oral traditions offers a comprehensive view of how power was negotiated, maintained, and transformed over time (Adebola, 2024). By examining excavation reports, historical records, and contemporary analyses, the research highlights the complexity and sophistication of pre-colonial governance. The study further discusses how these ancient systems continue to influence modern political and cultural identities in Ile-Ife, providing lessons for current governance practices (Ifeanyi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
There is a paucity of integrated research linking archaeological evidence with the administrative practices of pre-colonial Ile-Ife. The fragmented nature of available data limits the full reconstruction of traditional governance systems, hindering both academic inquiry and community understanding (Adegoke, 2023). This study aims to address this gap through a comprehensive archaeological investigation.
