Background of the study
Dialect leveling refers to the reduction of distinct regional features in language as speakers converge towards a common, standardized form. In Nigerian urban centers, where diverse dialects converge due to migration and mass media influence, phonological differences are often leveled, leading to a more homogenized speech pattern (Adeniyi, 2023). This study assesses how dialect leveling affects phonological variation by analyzing speech samples from various urban centers across Nigeria. Acoustic analysis is used to measure changes in vowel quality, consonant articulation, and prosodic features among speakers from different dialectal backgrounds. The study also examines sociolinguistic factors, such as education and exposure to national media, that contribute to leveling processes. Understanding these effects is crucial for language preservation and educational policy, as dialect leveling may lead to the loss of regional linguistic identity while facilitating mutual intelligibility in urban settings (Ibrahim, 2024). The findings will contribute to debates on standard language ideology and regional linguistic diversity.

Statement of the problem
Despite observable changes in urban speech, there is limited empirical research on dialect leveling and its impact on phonological variation in Nigerian urban centers (Chinwe, 2023). The homogenization of dialectal features may compromise regional linguistic identity and affect communication clarity in diverse urban environments. This lack of systematic analysis restricts the development of targeted language preservation and education strategies. This study seeks to fill this gap by documenting phonological differences and analyzing the extent of dialect leveling, providing a basis for informed language policy decisions.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To document phonological variation in urban Nigerian speech.
  2. To analyze the effects of dialect leveling on speech features.
  3. To recommend strategies for preserving regional linguistic diversity.

Research questions:

  1. What phonological changes occur due to dialect leveling in urban centers?
  2. How do acoustic measures differ between leveled and non-leveled speech?
  3. What strategies can preserve regional linguistic features?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Dialect leveling reduces phonological variability.
  2. Acoustic differences are significant between traditional and leveled speech.
  3. Educational interventions can preserve regional identity.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it examines the impact of dialect leveling on phonological variation in Nigerian urban centers, providing essential data for language preservation and educational policy. The findings will help balance standardization with regional diversity (Adeniyi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to urban Nigerian centers and focuses on acoustic and sociolinguistic analysis of dialect leveling.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Dialect Leveling: The process of reducing regional linguistic differences.
  2. Phonological Variation: Differences in speech sound production.
  3. Urban Centers: Major cities where diverse dialects converge.
