Background of the study
Tone and rhythm are fundamental components of Yoruba phonology, with tone distinguishing lexical meaning and rhythm structuring the temporal flow of speech. In Ibadan, Yoruba speakers employ intricate tonal and rhythmic patterns that interact to create expressive and meaningful communication (Adeniyi, 2023). This study investigates the interplay between tone and rhythm by analyzing natural speech samples collected from various contexts, including formal oratory and everyday conversation. Acoustic analysis is used to measure fundamental frequency contours, duration, and temporal spacing of syllables. Prior research suggests that the alignment of tonal patterns with rhythmic structures is critical for the intelligibility and aesthetic quality of Yoruba speech (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, these prosodic features play an essential role in cultural performances such as storytelling and music. By documenting how tone and rhythm work together, the study aims to provide insights into the cognitive and social processes underlying Yoruba phonology. The findings will have implications for language teaching, speech synthesis, and the preservation of Yoruba oral traditions.

Statement of the problem
Despite the significance of tone and rhythm in Yoruba phonology, their interaction remains underexplored in Ibadan. Inconsistencies in the alignment of tonal contours with rhythmic patterns may lead to ambiguities in meaning and reduced clarity in communication (Okeke, 2024). The absence of detailed acoustic data on this interplay hinders effective teaching methods and speech technology applications. This study addresses these gaps by systematically analyzing the co-occurrence of tone and rhythm in Yoruba, thereby providing a clearer understanding of their functional roles in communication and cultural expression.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To document tonal and rhythmic patterns in Yoruba speech in Ibadan.
  2. To analyze the interaction between tone and rhythm.
  3. To propose strategies for integrating prosodic features in language instruction.

Research questions:

  1. How do tone and rhythm interact in Yoruba speech?
  2. What acoustic features characterize their interplay?
  3. How can these insights improve language teaching?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Tone and rhythm interact systematically in Yoruba.
  2. Acoustic measurements will reveal consistent patterns.
  3. Integrating prosody in teaching enhances language clarity.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it elucidates the interplay between tone and rhythm in Yoruba phonology, offering valuable insights for linguists, educators, and speech technologists. The findings will inform more effective language teaching strategies and contribute to the preservation of Yoruba oral traditions (Adeniyi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Yoruba speakers in Ibadan, focusing on acoustic and perceptual analyses of tone and rhythm.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Tone: Pitch variations that determine lexical meaning.
  2. Rhythm: The temporal patterning of speech sounds.
  3. Phonology: The study of sound systems in language.
