Background of the study
Phonological assimilation is a process where sounds become more similar to adjacent sounds, enhancing speech fluency. In Nigerian Pidgin, particularly among urban youth, assimilation processes play a vital role in everyday communication. This study assesses how phonological assimilation manifests in Nigerian Pidgin, analyzing changes in consonant and vowel articulation in rapid speech (Afolabi, 2023). Urban youth often exhibit innovative speech patterns influenced by both digital communication and exposure to multiple language varieties. Acoustic analysis and sociolinguistic surveys will be used to document assimilation patterns, including regressive and progressive assimilation. The study also considers how assimilation contributes to the evolution of Nigerian Pidgin, affecting intelligibility and social identity. Findings will have implications for speech recognition technology and language teaching by providing data on natural phonological processes in a dynamic linguistic environment (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite its importance in everyday communication, phonological assimilation in Nigerian Pidgin among urban youth remains under-documented. Variability in assimilation processes can lead to reduced intelligibility and challenges in automated speech recognition systems (Chinwe, 2023). The lack of systematic acoustic data on assimilation hinders the development of effective language teaching and technological applications. This study aims to address these issues by analyzing the acoustic features and sociolinguistic factors that influence assimilation, thereby providing a basis for improving communication clarity.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To document assimilation processes in Nigerian Pidgin among urban youth.
  2. To analyze acoustic characteristics of assimilated sounds.
  3. To propose strategies for incorporating assimilation patterns in language technology.

Research questions:

  1. What assimilation processes are most common in Nigerian Pidgin?
  2. How do acoustic features vary with assimilation?
  3. What strategies can improve intelligibility?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Assimilation processes are prevalent among urban youth.
  2. Acoustic measures show systematic patterns in assimilated speech.
  3. Targeted interventions can enhance speech clarity.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it assesses phonological assimilation in Nigerian Pidgin among urban youth, offering insights for educators and developers of speech technology. The findings will inform language teaching and improve automated speech recognition systems, supporting effective communication (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to analyzing phonological assimilation in Nigerian Pidgin among urban youth, using acoustic and survey methods.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Phonological Assimilation: The process by which speech sounds become more similar.
  2. Nigerian Pidgin: An English-based creole widely used in Nigeria.
  3. Urban Youth: Young speakers from urban areas.
