Background of the Study
Migration has long been a dynamic force shaping human societies, and archaeological evidence provides a key means to trace these movements. In Uyo, diverse material remains such as pottery, settlement ruins, and burial sites offer insights into historical migration patterns. This study examines how archaeological data can illuminate the movement, settlement, and cultural integration of different groups within Akwa Ibom State (Etim, 2023). Migration patterns, influenced by environmental, economic, and social factors, are central to understanding population dynamics and cultural interactions. Recent advances in archaeological techniques have enabled researchers to date and contextualize artifacts more precisely, leading to richer interpretations of migratory events (Inyang, 2024). Furthermore, the study explores the implications of migration on social organization, trade, and cultural diffusion. By linking archaeological findings with historical narratives, this research contributes to a comprehensive understanding of how migration has shaped the region’s cultural landscape (Abasi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Current studies on migration in Uyo are limited by a lack of integrated archaeological and historical analyses. This deficiency restricts the understanding of migration patterns and their effects on cultural and social development. Inadequate documentation and analysis of archaeological evidence have hindered the reconstruction of historical migratory trends (Udofia, 2023). The study aims to fill these gaps by providing a detailed investigation of migration patterns through material culture.

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze archaeological evidence indicative of historical migration in Uyo.

  • To reconstruct migration patterns based on material culture.

  • To examine the impact of migration on cultural integration.

Research Questions

  • What archaeological indicators reveal migration patterns in Uyo?

  • How can material culture reconstruct historical migratory movements?

  • What are the cultural impacts of migration in the region?

Research Hypotheses

  • Archaeological evidence significantly reflects historical migration patterns.

  • Material culture provides reliable data for reconstructing migration.

  • Migration has substantially influenced cultural integration in Uyo.

Significance of the Study
The study offers valuable insights into migration dynamics, enhancing historical narratives and informing cultural preservation efforts. It bridges archaeological research with historical inquiry, benefiting both academic and local communities (Ekaette, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The research is confined to analyzing archaeological evidence related to migration within Uyo Local Government Area. It does not extend to modern migration or other regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Migration Patterns: The movement and settlement trends of populations over time.

  • Material Culture: Physical objects that provide insight into historical lifestyles.

  • Archaeological Evidence: Artifacts and structures used to interpret past human behavior.
