Background of the Study
Traditional burial practices serve as a repository of cultural values, offering deep insights into the social, religious, and artistic expressions of a community. In Ikwerre, these practices are not only rituals for the deceased but also represent a rich cultural tapestry that informs current archaeological investigations (Ibe, 2023). The study explores how burial customs have evolved over time, reflecting changes in societal structures and belief systems. Archaeological evidence from burial sites can reveal patterns of social hierarchy, migration, and cultural exchange, making them invaluable to researchers (Nwankwo, 2024). Furthermore, these practices often involve unique funerary art, symbolism, and ceremonial artifacts that contribute to our understanding of past cultures. However, modernization and external influences have begun to alter traditional practices, creating tensions between preserving heritage and embracing change. This research integrates anthropological and archaeological perspectives to critically analyze the significance of traditional burial practices in Ikwerre, aiming to document their cultural and historical relevance (Uche, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Modern influences and urbanization threaten the continuity of traditional burial practices in Ikwerre. The resulting loss of cultural heritage compromises the archaeological record and diminishes the community’s connection to its past. Inadequate documentation and preservation efforts further exacerbate these issues, limiting the understanding of the socio-cultural evolution of the area (Eke, 2024). This study seeks to address these challenges by systematically evaluating the archaeological significance of traditional burial practices.

Objectives of the Study

  • To document traditional burial practices in Ikwerre.

  • To evaluate the archaeological significance of burial sites.

  • To assess the impact of modernization on these practices.
