Background of the study
Prosody, including intonation, rhythm, and stress, is integral to the art of storytelling, particularly in Hausa cultural narratives in Kano. Traditional Hausa storytelling relies heavily on prosodic modulation to convey emotion, dramatize events, and maintain audience engagement (Sani, 2023). This study assesses prosodic features in Hausa storytelling by analyzing recorded performances using acoustic analysis software to capture pitch contours, stress patterns, and rhythmic timing. The expressive modulation of voice in storytelling not only enhances narrative impact but also reinforces cultural identity and communal values. Prior research indicates that prosody in Hausa storytelling is influenced by factors such as the storyteller’s age, experience, and audience expectations (Ibrahim, 2024). This investigation aims to document these prosodic features and explore their functional roles, ultimately contributing to improved methods for teaching effective oral communication and preserving cultural heritage (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Although prosodic elements are essential for effective Hausa storytelling, there is limited systematic analysis of these features in Kano. Inadequate documentation of prosodic patterns can hinder efforts to train new storytellers and to preserve traditional narrative forms (Sani, 2023). Variability in prosodic delivery may affect audience comprehension and engagement, yet the specific acoustic correlates remain underexplored. This study seeks to fill these gaps by providing detailed acoustic profiles of prosodic features in Hausa storytelling, thereby informing both theoretical and pedagogical approaches.
