Background of the Study
Cultural practices and traditions play an influential role in shaping genetic traits within communities. In Nsukka, indigenous customs related to marriage, diet, and lifestyle have been postulated to impact the genetic makeup of the population (Chukwu, 2023). This study evaluates the extent to which cultural influences, including traditional dietary practices and social norms, affect the distribution of genetic traits among indigenes. By integrating anthropological fieldwork with genetic profiling, the research investigates correlations between cultural behaviors and the prevalence of specific genetic markers. Previous research has indicated that cultural practices, such as preferential marriage patterns, can lead to distinct genetic traits being prevalent in isolated communities (Ikechukwu, 2024). This study aims to explore these relationships in Nsukka, offering insights into how cultural evolution and genetic inheritance are intertwined (Nnamani, 2025). The outcomes of this research may provide a foundation for further studies on genetic epidemiology and support culturally informed health strategies.

Statement of the Problem
There is limited research on the role of cultural influences in shaping genetic traits among the Nsukka population. The interplay between traditional practices and genetic inheritance remains poorly understood, hindering the development of culturally appropriate health interventions (Okechukwu, 2023). This study seeks to address this gap by providing empirical evidence on how cultural factors correlate with genetic traits, thereby enhancing our understanding of the population’s genetic profile (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To document prevalent cultural practices among Nsukka indigenes.

  2. To analyze the relationship between these practices and genetic traits.

  3. To recommend culturally sensitive health interventions.

Research Questions:

  1. What cultural practices are prevalent in Nsukka?

  2. How do these practices influence genetic traits?

  3. What implications do these influences have for public health?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Cultural practices significantly affect the distribution of genetic traits.

  2. Traditional marriage patterns contribute to specific genetic markers.

  3. Cultural influences can be leveraged to enhance public health strategies.

Significance of the Study
This study illuminates the cultural determinants of genetic traits, providing a framework for integrating cultural insights into genetic research and public health interventions. The findings will assist in designing culturally tailored health strategies in Nsukka (Uche, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the influence of cultural practices on genetic traits among indigenes of Nsukka Local Government Area only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Genetic Traits: Inherited characteristics determined by genes.

  • Cultural Influences: Traditions and practices that shape behaviors and lifestyles.

  • Epidemiology: The study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states.
