Background of the study
Intonation is a crucial component of prosody, conveying emotions and meaning in spoken language. At Wazobia FM, Nigerian Pidgin—an English-based creole—is employed as the primary language of broadcast, characterized by distinctive intonation patterns that contribute to its dynamic expressiveness. Research has shown that intonation variations in Nigerian Pidgin play an essential role in communication, affecting listener perception and engagement (Oluwaseun, 2023). This study assesses the intonation patterns observed in Nigerian Pidgin broadcasts, focusing on pitch variation, stress distribution, and rhythm. Advances in acoustic technology now allow for detailed measurement of these prosodic features, yet systematic analyses within broadcast contexts remain limited (Afolabi, 2024). By examining recorded segments from Wazobia FM, this study aims to document the intonational contours and identify their contribution to the overall communicative effectiveness of Nigerian Pidgin. The investigation will also consider how these patterns influence audience engagement and may vary with different broadcasting styles (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite the integral role of intonation in Nigerian Pidgin, there is a dearth of systematic research on its patterns in broadcast media. Variability in pitch, stress, and rhythm can lead to differences in message delivery and listener comprehension (Okeke, 2023). This lack of standardized intonation analysis complicates efforts to train broadcasters and develop speech recognition systems that accommodate Nigerian Pidgin. Inconsistent intonation may affect the clarity and effectiveness of communication, yet the underlying patterns remain underexplored. This study addresses these challenges by analyzing intonation patterns at Wazobia FM, thereby filling a critical gap in our understanding of prosodic features in Nigerian broadcast language.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To analyze the intonation patterns in Nigerian Pidgin broadcasts at Wazobia FM.
  2. To identify prosodic features such as pitch, stress, and rhythm.
  3. To assess the impact of these intonation patterns on audience engagement.

Research questions:

  1. What are the prevalent intonation patterns in Nigerian Pidgin at Wazobia FM?
  2. How do pitch and stress variations manifest in the broadcasts?
  3. What is the effect of these intonation patterns on listener comprehension?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Nigerian Pidgin intonation patterns significantly influence audience engagement.
  2. Distinct prosodic features are characteristic of Wazobia FM broadcasts.
  3. Standardizing intonation training can improve broadcast clarity.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it provides a detailed analysis of intonation patterns in Nigerian Pidgin at Wazobia FM. The findings will aid broadcasters, linguists, and educators in developing training programs that enhance vocal delivery and communication clarity, contributing to improved media practices and language teaching strategies (Oluwaseun, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to analyzing intonation patterns in Nigerian Pidgin broadcasts at Wazobia FM, focusing on acoustic prosodic features.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Intonation: The variation of pitch in speech that conveys meaning and emotion.
  2. Nigerian Pidgin: An English-based creole language used informally in Nigeria.
  3. Broadcast Communication: The transmission of audio content via radio.
