Background of the study:
Traditional fishing techniques in Bonny Local Government have sustained local communities for generations. These methods, which often rely on indigenous knowledge of local waterways and fish behavior, have proven to be environmentally sustainable and economically vital (Ibrahim, 2023). As modern fishing practices and technologies emerge, there is growing concern about overfishing and environmental degradation. Recent research highlights that traditional methods not only promote sustainability but also foster a deeper connection between the community and its natural resources (Ekpe, 2024). This investigation examines how traditional techniques are maintained, the challenges they face from modern practices, and their potential contributions to sustainable fisheries management. The study also considers the socio-economic implications for local fishermen and the broader community, providing a comprehensive evaluation of sustainability in a changing economic landscape.

Statement of the problem:
Traditional fishing techniques in Bonny are increasingly threatened by modern fishing methods and environmental degradation, which may undermine their sustainability. The loss of these practices could lead to ecological imbalance and economic hardship among local fishermen. The study aims to assess these challenges and propose sustainable alternatives to preserve indigenous fishing methods (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To document traditional fishing techniques in Bonny.

  2. To assess the sustainability of these methods compared to modern practices.

  3. To recommend strategies for preserving indigenous fishing techniques.

Research questions:

  1. What are the traditional fishing techniques used in Bonny?

  2. How sustainable are these techniques in the current environmental context?

  3. What measures can protect and promote these indigenous practices?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional fishing techniques are more sustainable than modern methods.

  2. Modern practices negatively impact the sustainability of indigenous methods.

  3. Community-based interventions can safeguard traditional fishing practices.

Significance of the study:
The study underscores the importance of traditional fishing techniques for ecological and economic sustainability, offering recommendations for conservation policies and community empowerment in Bonny Local Government (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating traditional fishing techniques and their sustainability within Bonny Local Government only, excluding other fisheries or regions.

Definitions of terms:
Traditional Fishing Techniques: Indigenous methods used for catching fish.
Sustainability: The capacity to maintain ecological and economic balance.
Modern Fishing Methods: Contemporary techniques often involving advanced technology.
