Background of the study
Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial hub, is characterized by a highly multilingual environment where diverse languages coexist. In the bustling markets of Lagos, business communication often involves code-switching and the use of multiple languages, including Nigerian English, indigenous languages, and Pidgin English (Akinola, 2023). Multilingualism in these markets is both an asset and a challenge; while it facilitates communication among people from different linguistic backgrounds, it can also lead to misunderstandings and inefficiencies in transactions. Businesses leverage language skills to build rapport, negotiate deals, and manage customer relations. However, the absence of a standardized language protocol in commercial interactions can affect transaction clarity and professionalism (Okeke, 2024). This study investigates how multilingualism influences business communication in Lagos markets, examining the linguistic strategies employed by traders and the impact on customer satisfaction and business efficiency. It further considers the role of language in shaping economic opportunities and social cohesion in a multicultural urban setting (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the problem
The diversity of languages in Lagos markets presents both opportunities and challenges for effective business communication. While multilingualism can enhance interactions, inconsistent language use often leads to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and potential conflicts during commercial transactions (Eze, 2024). The lack of a common linguistic framework may result in communication breakdowns, reducing the overall efficiency and professionalism of market interactions. This study seeks to examine the effects of multilingualism on business communication in Lagos markets, identifying key issues and proposing solutions to harmonize language use, thereby improving commercial interactions and customer satisfaction.
