Background of the study
Globalization has significantly influenced cultural and linguistic landscapes worldwide, and the Yoruba language is no exception. Once a robust medium of daily communication and cultural expression, Yoruba now contends with the pervasive impact of global languages and modern media. Globalization has introduced new linguistic elements, often prioritizing English for economic and educational opportunities (Balogun, 2023). This shift has led to changes in vocabulary, pronunciation, and usage patterns among Yoruba speakers. Additionally, the influx of global cultural content via television, the internet, and social media has reshaped traditional language practices, leading to a gradual erosion of certain idiomatic expressions and cultural references (Adeyemi, 2024). While globalization has facilitated intercultural communication and access to broader knowledge networks, it also challenges the preservation of indigenous linguistic heritage. The study explores how globalization affects the usage of Yoruba in various domains such as education, media, and interpersonal communication, and assesses the implications for cultural identity and language sustainability (Olaoye, 2025).

Statement of the problem
The influence of globalization on Yoruba language usage has raised concerns about cultural dilution and the potential loss of traditional linguistic forms. As English and other global languages become more dominant in formal and informal settings, Yoruba speakers face pressure to adapt their language use to remain competitive and modern (Ibrahim, 2024). This shift results in reduced transmission of traditional vocabulary and cultural nuances, undermining efforts to preserve Yoruba heritage. The absence of robust policies supporting indigenous language use further exacerbates this trend, leading to a gradual decline in authentic language practices. This study seeks to examine these dynamics and propose measures to sustain Yoruba usage amid global influences.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To analyze the impact of globalization on Yoruba language practices.
  2. To assess changes in linguistic features among Yoruba speakers.
  3. To propose strategies for preserving traditional Yoruba in a globalized context.

Research questions:

  1. How has globalization influenced Yoruba language usage?
  2. What linguistic changes are observable among Yoruba speakers?
  3. What measures can help preserve traditional Yoruba amid global trends?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Globalization significantly alters Yoruba language practices.
  2. Exposure to global media correlates with reduced use of traditional Yoruba expressions.
  3. Policy interventions can mitigate negative impacts on language preservation.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it explores the impact of globalization on Yoruba language usage, offering insights into the challenges of maintaining indigenous languages in a global context. The findings will support policymakers and cultural advocates in designing strategies to preserve Yoruba linguistic heritage while embracing modern influences (Ogunleye, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the effects of globalization on Yoruba language usage, focusing exclusively on linguistic changes and preservation strategies.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Globalization: The process of increased interconnectedness and cultural exchange worldwide.
  2. Yoruba Language: The indigenous language of the Yoruba people.
  3. Cultural Preservation: Efforts to maintain and protect traditional cultural practices and language.
