Background of the study
YouTube has become a powerful medium for cultural expression and the preservation of indigenous languages. In Nigeria, Yoruba channels on YouTube have gained prominence for their role in promoting the Yoruba language and cultural heritage. These channels showcase a wide variety of content—ranging from traditional storytelling and music to modern commentary on social issues—thereby providing a dynamic platform for cultural expression (Adeola, 2023). The digital environment enables creators to blend traditional language practices with contemporary media trends, engaging younger audiences and fostering renewed interest in indigenous languages (Chukwu, 2024). However, challenges persist in ensuring content quality, audience reach, and sustainable monetization, which may affect the long-term viability of these channels. This study appraises the quality, impact, and challenges of Yoruba YouTube content, examining how these channels contribute to language preservation and cultural identity in a globalized digital landscape (Oluwaseun, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although YouTube offers significant potential for promoting Nigerian languages, there is a lack of systematic evaluation of indigenous language content, particularly on Yoruba channels. The potential of these channels to preserve and revitalize the Yoruba language is undermined by inconsistent content quality, limited audience engagement, and monetization challenges (Okeke, 2024). These issues hinder the sustainability and impact of digital cultural expression, thereby affecting the broader effort of cultural preservation. This study seeks to address this gap by critically appraising the content of Yoruba YouTube channels, identifying both strengths and challenges in leveraging digital media for indigenous language promotion.

By identifying the strengths and challenges of Yoruba YouTube content, the research contributes to strategies that enhance digital cultural expression and language preservation (Nwachukwu, 2023).

This study is limited to appraising YouTube content in Nigerian languages, specifically focusing on Yoruba channels.
