Background of the Study
Digital journalism has transformed news dissemination by providing rapid, accessible, and interactive platforms that influence public perception. In Uyo, digital news outlets play a significant role in shaping opinions about governance and political accountability (Etim, 2023). As traditional media face declining viewership, digital journalism emerges as a critical tool for transparency and accountability. The immediacy and interactivity of digital platforms allow citizens to engage in real-time discussions and challenge official narratives (Ibekwe, 2024). However, the proliferation of digital content also raises concerns about accuracy, bias, and the spread of misinformation (Okon, 2025). This study explores how digital journalism impacts public perception of governance in Uyo, analyzing the ways in which online news influences trust in government institutions and civic participation. By examining audience engagement and content quality, the research seeks to identify the factors that shape public opinion in the digital era.

Statement of the Problem
Digital journalism, while enhancing information accessibility, poses challenges in ensuring accurate and unbiased reporting. In Uyo, the rapid spread of online news has led to mixed public perceptions of governance, with some citizens questioning the credibility of digital sources (Udo, 2023). Misinformation and sensationalism have further complicated citizens’ understanding of government actions, undermining trust in public institutions. This study aims to address these concerns by examining the relationship between digital journalism and public perception of governance, and identifying ways to improve media accountability (Anyanwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of digital journalism on public perceptions of governance.

  2. To identify the factors contributing to biased reporting in digital media.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving the credibility of digital journalism.

Research Questions:

  1. How does digital journalism influence public perceptions of governance in Uyo?

  2. What factors contribute to the dissemination of biased information online?

  3. How can digital journalism practices be improved to foster trust in governance?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Digital journalism significantly influences public perception of governance.

  2. Misinformation in digital news negatively affects public trust.

  3. Implementing stricter editorial guidelines can improve credibility.

Significance of the Study
This study provides insights into the relationship between digital journalism and public perception of governance, offering recommendations to enhance media credibility and public trust. Its findings will be valuable to media practitioners, regulators, and policymakers aiming to promote responsible journalism and improve civic engagement (Okorie, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to digital journalism’s impact on public perception in Uyo Local Government and focuses exclusively on issues related to governance.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Digital Journalism: The practice of reporting news and information via digital platforms.
