Background of the study
Language death, the process by which a language falls out of use, is a critical issue facing many indigenous communities, including the Bassa people. Historically, the Bassa language has been a vital conduit for cultural expression and community identity; however, rapid social changes, globalization, and the dominance of more widely spoken languages have accelerated its decline (Okoro, 2023). The erosion of the Bassa language threatens not only linguistic diversity but also the cultural heritage of the community. In response, various revitalization strategies have been proposed, ranging from community-based language programs to formal education initiatives (Chukwu, 2024). Despite these efforts, the success of revitalization initiatives remains uncertain due to challenges such as limited resources, insufficient policy support, and changing attitudes among younger generations. This study evaluates the current state of the Bassa language, examines the factors contributing to its endangerment, and critically assesses the effectiveness of implemented revitalization strategies. By focusing on both the causes of language decline and the potential pathways for recovery, the research aims to contribute to broader discussions on preserving linguistic heritage in indigenous communities (Udo, 2023).

Statement of the problem
The Bassa language is facing imminent extinction as a result of declining usage, intergenerational discontinuity, and insufficient institutional support. The ongoing language death undermines the cultural identity of the Bassa people and diminishes their historical heritage (Ifeanyi, 2024). Despite several revitalization efforts, the language continues to lose speakers, particularly among younger community members who are increasingly favoring more dominant languages. The lack of comprehensive policies and sustainable language programs exacerbates the problem, leaving the Bassa language vulnerable to complete erosion. This study seeks to identify the primary factors driving language death and to evaluate the effectiveness of current revitalization strategies, providing recommendations to enhance language preservation initiatives (Ebele, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To identify the factors contributing to the decline of the Bassa language.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of current language revitalization strategies among the Bassa people.
  3. To propose recommendations for sustainable language preservation.

Research questions:

  1. What are the main factors driving the decline of the Bassa language?
  2. How effective are current revitalization strategies in preserving the Bassa language?
  3. What measures can be implemented to improve language preservation among the Bassa people?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Socioeconomic and cultural factors significantly contribute to the decline of the Bassa language.
  2. Current revitalization strategies have a limited impact on reversing language death.
  3. Comprehensive, community-driven initiatives can significantly enhance language preservation efforts.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it addresses the urgent issue of language death among the Bassa people and evaluates practical revitalization strategies. The research findings will offer valuable insights for community leaders, policymakers, and linguists working to preserve endangered languages. By identifying effective measures and recommending sustainable practices, the study contributes to broader efforts in cultural preservation and linguistic diversity (Ike, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating language death and revitalization strategies among the Bassa people. It focuses solely on the Bassa community and does not extend to other endangered languages or broader sociolinguistic trends.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Language Death: The process by which a language loses its last native speakers and ceases to be used.
  2. Revitalization: Efforts aimed at restoring and preserving a declining language.
  3. Bassa People: An indigenous community whose cultural identity is closely tied to the Bassa language.
