Background of the Study (200 words)
Urbanization has dramatically transformed cities across Nigeria, with Lagos Island Local Government Area being a prime example of rapid urban growth. This expansion has placed considerable pressure on waste management systems, resulting in challenges related to sustainability and environmental health (Ibrahim, 2023). The urban influx has led to increased waste generation, which in turn necessitates more efficient waste collection, recycling, and disposal mechanisms. However, traditional waste management practices have struggled to keep pace with urban growth, often exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure and funding (Chisom, 2024). Studies suggest that urbanization can catalyze both innovative waste management solutions and exacerbate environmental degradation if not managed properly (Soyinka, 2025). This study examines how urbanization impacts waste management practices on Lagos Island, exploring the interplay between population growth, policy implementation, and environmental outcomes. It aims to identify sustainable strategies that can mitigate adverse impacts while promoting urban resilience (Obi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Lagos Island, rapid urbanization has led to significant challenges in waste management, including inadequate collection systems, environmental pollution, and resource inefficiencies (Ibrahim, 2023). The current waste management practices are not fully equipped to handle the growing volume of waste, resulting in public health concerns and environmental degradation. This situation is exacerbated by funding constraints and lack of effective policy enforcement. There is a critical need to investigate how urbanization is affecting waste management practices and to develop sustainable solutions that address these challenges (Chisom, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the impact of urbanization on waste management practices.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of current waste management systems.
  3. To recommend sustainable strategies for improved waste management.

Research Questions

  1. How has urbanization affected waste management practices in Lagos Island?
  2. What are the shortcomings of the current waste management systems?
  3. What sustainable measures can improve waste management?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Urbanization has a significant negative impact on waste management practices.
  2. Current waste management systems are inadequate for the urban demands of Lagos Island.
  3. Sustainable strategies will significantly improve waste management outcomes.

Significance of the Study (70 words)
This study is significant as it evaluates the environmental and public health impacts of urbanization on waste management. The findings will inform policymakers and urban planners on the need for innovative and sustainable waste management solutions, ultimately contributing to a cleaner and more resilient urban environment (Soyinka, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to examining the impact of urbanization on waste management practices in Lagos Island Local Government Area, Lagos State.

Definitions of Terms

  • Urbanization: The process of population shift from rural to urban areas.
  • Waste management: The collection, processing, and disposal of waste materials.
  • Sustainable strategies: Approaches that ensure long-term environmental, economic, and social benefits.
