Background of the Study
Urban development policies are crucial for sustainable growth and social inclusion. In Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, the adoption of gender-sensitive policies has been proposed as a means to ensure that both men and women benefit equitably from urban planning initiatives. These policies aim to address disparities in access to housing, employment, transportation, and public services (Eme, 2023). However, the actual effectiveness of such policies in practice remains under-examined. While some studies suggest that gender-sensitive urban development can improve quality of life for marginalized groups, others argue that entrenched patriarchal structures hinder successful implementation (Ofu, 2024). This study critically assesses the implementation and outcomes of gender-sensitive urban development initiatives in Uyo, focusing on how these policies have influenced social and economic opportunities. By analyzing policy documents, conducting stakeholder interviews, and reviewing community feedback, the research seeks to determine the extent to which urban development has become more inclusive (Ibekwe, 2025).
Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Uyo, despite the adoption of gender-sensitive policies in urban development, disparities in access to services and opportunities persist. Women continue to face challenges in accessing affordable housing, employment, and safe transportation, indicating that current policies may not be fully effective (Eme, 2023). This shortfall hampers efforts to create truly inclusive urban spaces and undermines broader development goals. There is a critical need to evaluate these policies to understand their limitations and propose strategies for improvement (Ofu, 2024).
