Background of the study:
Political interference in the administration of secondary schools has increasingly become a contentious issue in Ebonyi State. In Abakaliki, political influences have been reported to affect decision-making processes, resource allocation, and school management practices. Such interference often results in favoritism, mismanagement, and a lack of accountability, which can undermine the quality of education delivered to students (Nwafor, 2023). Politically motivated appointments and policies may prioritize personal or party interests over educational needs, leading to inefficiencies and disparities among schools. This phenomenon disrupts the autonomy of educational institutions and compromises the integrity of administrative processes. With the growing politicization of school affairs, there is a pressing need to critically examine the extent of political interference and its impact on educational outcomes. This study seeks to explore the mechanisms through which political influence affects school administration, evaluating both the immediate and long-term consequences for academic performance and institutional development (Okoro, 2025).

Statement of the problem:
Political interference in Abakaliki’s secondary schools has led to administrative inefficiencies and unequal resource distribution. Such interference compromises the effectiveness of school management and negatively impacts student performance. This study aims to assess the extent of political influence and identify strategies to safeguard educational administration from undue external pressures (Okoro, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To determine the extent of political interference in school administration.
  2. To assess its impact on academic performance and resource allocation.
  3. To recommend measures for reducing political influence in school management.

Research questions:

  1. How prevalent is political interference in the administration of secondary schools?
  2. What is the impact of political influence on educational outcomes?
  3. What strategies can minimize political interference in school management?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Political interference significantly disrupts the administration of secondary schools.
  2. H₂: Schools affected by political interference have poorer academic performance.
  3. H₃: Implementing governance reforms can reduce political interference.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides insights into the negative effects of political interference on school administration. The findings will help educational authorities develop policies that promote transparency, accountability, and effective management in Abakaliki (Nwafor, 2023; Okoro, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The research is limited to exploring the influence of political interference in the administration of secondary schools in Abakaliki Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, and does not consider other external factors affecting education.

Definitions of terms:

  • Political Interference: Unwarranted involvement by political actors in school management.
  • School Administration: The processes and practices involved in managing educational institutions.
  • Governance Reforms: Changes implemented to improve transparency and accountability in administration.
