Background of the study:
Forensic anthropology plays a critical role in gender determination during crime investigations, a process essential for the identification of unknown remains in Abeokuta North. Techniques such as pelvic morphology analysis, cranial measurements, and DNA testing are employed to ascertain gender with high accuracy (Ogun, 2023; Fadare, 2024). In Ogun State, these methodologies have been instrumental in supporting criminal investigations by providing vital information that narrows down suspect pools and identifies victims. The application of forensic anthropology in gender determination not only enhances investigative precision but also contributes to the overall credibility of forensic evidence in court (Ogun, 2023). Advances in analytical methods and digital imaging have further improved the reliability and speed of gender determination processes. These scientific contributions are increasingly recognized as critical components of the modern criminal justice system (Fadare, 2024).

Statement of the problem:
Despite technological advancements, challenges persist in applying forensic anthropology for gender determination in Abeokuta North. Inconsistent methodologies and resource constraints often result in delays or inaccuracies in investigations, impeding the criminal justice process (Ogun, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the effectiveness of forensic anthropology in gender determination.
  2. To identify challenges in the application of these methods.
  3. To propose improvements for forensic gender determination processes.

Research questions:

  1. How effective is forensic anthropology in determining gender?
  2. What challenges are encountered in its application?
  3. What improvements can enhance the accuracy of gender determination?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Forensic anthropology techniques reliably determine gender in crime investigations.
  2. Inadequate resources impede methodological consistency.
  3. Improved technology will enhance accuracy in gender determination.

Significance of the study:
This study will provide insights into refining forensic methods for gender determination, ultimately supporting criminal investigations and improving the reliability of forensic evidence in Abeokuta North (Fadare, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to forensic anthropology’s role in gender determination in crime investigations in Abeokuta North Local Government Area. It does not include other forensic disciplines or regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Gender determination: The process of identifying an individual’s gender from biological evidence.
  • Forensic anthropology: The application of anthropological methods to legal investigations.
  • Methodological consistency: The uniform application of research methods.
