Background of the study:
Mass disasters present significant challenges to victim identification, and forensic anthropology plays a pivotal role in these scenarios in Uyo. The application of skeletal analysis, DNA extraction, and facial reconstruction techniques provides critical assistance in identifying victims amidst large-scale tragedies (Etim, 2023; Ikpe, 2024). In Akwa Ibom State, the integration of forensic methods into disaster response has enhanced the capacity to manage mass casualty incidents, offering both scientific rigor and sensitivity to the emotional needs of affected families. The interdisciplinary collaboration between forensic experts, disaster management teams, and local authorities has been instrumental in streamlining identification processes (Etim, 2023). Recent advances in technology, including 3D imaging and computer-assisted reconstructions, have further refined the accuracy and speed of victim identification. These improvements not only contribute to the administration of justice but also to the timely provision of closure for families impacted by disasters (Ikpe, 2024).

Statement of the problem:
Mass disaster victim identification in Uyo is hindered by challenges such as limited technological resources, inadequate training, and coordination difficulties among agencies. These issues delay victim identification and affect the overall disaster response effectiveness (Etim, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To appraise the use of forensic anthropology in mass disaster victim identification.
  2. To identify challenges in current identification processes.
  3. To propose strategies for improved coordination and technology use.

Research questions:

  1. How effective is forensic anthropology in mass disaster victim identification?
  2. What are the main challenges in the current identification process?
  3. How can coordination between agencies be improved?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Forensic anthropology significantly enhances mass disaster victim identification.
  2. Technological limitations adversely affect identification accuracy.
  3. Improved inter-agency coordination will streamline the identification process.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant in providing evidence-based recommendations for improving mass disaster victim identification processes, ultimately aiding in timely justice and closure for affected families in Uyo (Ikpe, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to forensic anthropology applications in mass disaster victim identification in Uyo Local Government Area. It does not include other forensic applications or regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Mass disaster: An event resulting in numerous casualties.
  • Victim identification: The process of determining the identity of deceased individuals.
  • Forensic applications: The use of scientific methods in legal investigations.
