Background of the study:
Public perception of forensic anthropology in Umuahia North plays a crucial role in shaping trust in the criminal justice system. The community’s understanding of how forensic anthropological evidence is gathered and interpreted can significantly influence legal outcomes and the overall credibility of investigations (Ezenwa, 2023; Okafor, 2024). In Abia State, initiatives to educate the public about forensic science have gradually increased awareness, yet misconceptions persist. Many community members remain skeptical about the reliability of skeletal analyses and the scientific rigor behind these methods. However, increased exposure to forensic success stories has started to shift opinions, fostering greater acceptance of forensic anthropology as a vital component of criminal justice (Ezenwa, 2023). The evolving narrative, supported by media reports and academic research, underscores the need for continuous public engagement and education to improve perceptions and ensure that forensic evidence is appropriately valued in legal processes (Okafor, 2024).

Statement of the problem:
Despite growing awareness, public perception in Umuahia North remains ambivalent towards forensic anthropology in criminal justice. Misunderstandings about the science underpinning forensic techniques contribute to skepticism, which may affect the judicial process and victim support (Ezenwa, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess public perceptions of forensic anthropology in criminal justice.
  2. To identify factors contributing to public skepticism.
  3. To develop strategies for improving public understanding.

Research questions:

  1. What is the public perception of forensic anthropology in Umuahia North?
  2. What factors contribute to skepticism about forensic methods?
  3. How can public understanding be enhanced?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Public perception significantly affects trust in forensic evidence.
  2. Misconceptions about forensic science contribute to skepticism.
  3. Targeted educational programs will improve public understanding.

Significance of the study:
This study will illuminate public attitudes toward forensic anthropology, providing data that can be used to design educational campaigns that enhance trust and collaboration between the community and the criminal justice system (Okafor, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to public perception of forensic anthropology in criminal justice in Umuahia North Local Government Area. It does not include broader forensic disciplines or other communities.

Definitions of terms:

  • Public perception: The collective opinion held by community members.
  • Forensic anthropology: The scientific study of human remains in legal contexts.
  • Criminal justice: The system of law enforcement and legal proceedings.
