Background of the study:
Childhood malnutrition remains a critical public health challenge in Ogbomosho North, where traditional health practitioners are often the first line of intervention. These practitioners, deeply rooted in local cultural traditions and indigenous knowledge, provide nutritional advice and remedies that are widely accepted within communities (Balogun, 2023; Adekunle, 2024). Their practices, though not always aligned with modern nutritional science, have been instrumental in addressing malnutrition in resource-limited settings (Oluwaseun, 2023). Current research suggests that integrating traditional methods with contemporary health practices could foster a more holistic approach to combating malnutrition (Adesina, 2024). Social dynamics, community trust, and accessibility of traditional healers contribute to their significant role in promoting child health. However, the effectiveness of these interventions and their potential for wider adoption in public health strategies remain underexplored. Investigating these aspects could inform the development of integrated health models that respect cultural heritage while incorporating evidence-based practices (Oluseyi, 2025).

Statement of the problem:
Despite the widespread use of traditional health practitioners, childhood malnutrition persists in Ogbomosho North. There is limited empirical evidence on the efficacy of indigenous nutritional interventions, and modern healthcare strategies often overlook these community-based practices. This gap necessitates an evaluation of the role traditional practitioners play in mitigating malnutrition (Balogun, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the contribution of traditional health practitioners in reducing childhood malnutrition.
  2. To compare indigenous nutritional practices with modern interventions.
  3. To recommend integrative strategies for effective nutritional management.

Research questions:

  1. What role do traditional health practitioners play in addressing childhood malnutrition?
  2. How effective are traditional nutritional practices compared to modern interventions?
  3. What integrative strategies can optimize malnutrition management?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional health practitioners significantly contribute to reducing childhood malnutrition.
  2. Indigenous nutritional practices are as effective as modern interventions in some cases.
  3. Integrative health strategies will lead to improved nutritional outcomes.

Significance of the study:
This study will elucidate the critical role of traditional health practitioners in combating childhood malnutrition, offering policy recommendations that incorporate indigenous practices with modern healthcare to improve child health outcomes (Adekunle, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the role of traditional health practitioners in combating childhood malnutrition in Ogbomosho North Local Government. It does not cover other geographical areas or health conditions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Traditional health practitioners: Community healers using indigenous methods.
  • Childhood malnutrition: Inadequate nutrition leading to impaired growth in children.
  • Integrative health strategies: Combined approaches that blend traditional and modern healthcare practices.
